ipod software update

Hi,

I have a 80g 5th Ipod.

Its proberly old I realise but will ask anyway...

When I enter itunes I get a prompted with "ipod s/w version 1.2.3" is ready to install...

I havent installed it yet because I dont want to lose whatever I currently have on my IPOD...is that a possibility if I only update the software version for the Ipod..

Please clarify..
