ipod touch 1st gen questions

I bought a second hand ipod touch and am enjoying some of the great games like Cut the rope

Just a few of questions

Its running version 3.1.3, if I jailbreak it, would it be better?
When I power it on it takes about 20 seconds to come on, is this normal? (my classic comes on instantly)
When I try and copy an avi file to it, it wont add to it, do i need to messaround converting everything? Will jailbreaking it allow other file types to play?

The iPod Classic isn't running iOS - 20 seconds sounds about right.

Ipod needs MP4, have to convert from avi.

The new VLC app on the app store will play avi files

I think the VLC app requires iPhone, not iPod.

I'm using it on a iPod touch 3rd gen and it works fine

VLC needs iOS 3.2 or higher, the 1st gen touch/iphone only go upto 3.1.3... (unless you jailbreak?)

Tried it on my 2nd Gen iPod Touch and it didn't work. (OS 4.1)

"The app 'VLC' could not be installed on the iPod 'iPod touch' because it is not compatible with this iPod".

The 2nd Gen also doesn't get backgrounds with OS4, or multitasking, so the same OS but limitations. I guess 3rd Gen gets loads more then?

1st Gen iPod Touch and 1st gen iPhone are in the same pickle, can't run everything.

Touch 3rd gen can run everything as far as I know.

^ VLC probably needs hardware ARM7 Java acceleration or similar, so the OS version is irrelevant... just the relentless pace of smartphone development.
