I have the new 32GB model and have a niggling wifi problem. 99% of the time, if I join my WLAN it won't pick up an IP address or show the wifi icon in top left corner. If I go into Safari etc it won't browse etc.

If I go back into setting, turn off wifi, then on again it will again find my WLAN and this time the icon appears (even has an Ip address if I drill into details). I also have this problem when I went to a mates place, and I am pretty certain I have seen someone with a last gen touch having same "problem".

Has anyone else come across this? I know how to Connect etc, I am just saying after the 1st connect it doesn't get an IP address/show wifi icon/have connectivity, but a off/on fixes it.

Router is a Netgear DG834GT on latest firmware.

Bump. Come on, every man and his dog in this subforum must have an iPod Touch or iPhone!!! Has no-one come across this problem?

Sounds like a faulty Wi-Fi chip?

Other than that I'd suggest it's the router

I am going to someone's place now who has wifi and a different router. I don't think the chip is faulty as it seems to work after second connect. I think he has the old touch as well. May borrow that and test at my house.

So just to clarify, if you go anywhere (that your ipod has already logged onto), once you switch on the wifi you get instant access (and the wifi icon) ?

I'm kinda becoming the annoying guy who suggests people with problems with Apple stuff look in the Apple support forums.

Fair point, just thought there would be a lot of ppl from UK here who may have similar kit to me etc so I can easily rule out incompatibility, router issue etc (the discussion forums are international).

I had this exact same problem (iPod Touch 2G 16gb, and incidentally also DG834GT), but since the latest firmware update, it seems to have completely resolved!

LOL.

Last night, installed 2.2 (I didn't realise I had to manually check for updates!!). Logged on first time on 2 seperate access points today (both dg834gt, though).

One of the change notes was

"- Fixed issues where some users could not connect to secure WPA Wi-Fi networks"

So I know it wasn't faulty and clearly others had this problem too. Mine is a 2G 32Gb, so maybe that is why others have not noticed it and it is 2G specific. One website noted this fix was not in the iPhone 2.2 release btw.

All sorted now :)
