Hi
Im currently using a 1gb sony nw-e407b mp3 player and love the sound quality through my sony mdr-ex71 headphones. really clear and loads of bass

But its only 1gb so i just got my hands on a 30gb ipod video, and the sound quality is s*** compared to the sony.

So what i want to know is how to make it sound better, i will be using the same headphones.

Does it make much difference if you use the apple codecs or mp3 etc ???

You can try rockboxing the ipod so you got user EQ - but sound on sound - the Sony will beat an ipod.... you just going to have to get used to it not sounding as good! Id take back the iPod and get a sony NW-A808.

the ipod headphone out isn't great compared to other players no matter what you do tbh.

to get the most out of an ipod it really needs amplifying with a lineout dock and some good headphones.....if you're not prepared to do this there's a lot of other players that will sound better until you do.

but once setup with good equipment + Rockbox with equalizer and crossfeed enabled they can sound really trick and overtake the others.

You should find the A808 to have better sound quality than your old sony anyway! Little tip... when you get your new player - the headphones that come with sound even better if you cover the 3 vents at back of the earphones with 3-4 layers of Clingfilm... if you hear crumpling sounds when you insert earphones after - put a pin hole in one of the clingfilmed covered vents.
