I also use Winamp with the iPod plugin. Its very good I think. Now there are actually two plugins you could use. There is the default MP3 player plugin that Winamp comes with or there is the devoted to iPod plugin at http://www.mlipod.com/. I use this one. When you run the ml_iPod installer it prompts you for permission to remove the Winamp default plugin.

If you already use Winamp for your media and you don't want another media player just for Winamp then 100% yes give the ml_iPod a tryout.

I'm thinking about getting a new iPod but I need to work out a way of getting the iPod firmware updates without using iTunes. I used iTunes when it was v5 or something. It was OK then but its far too bloated now I believe, but I suppose I should try it out to check. But then, as you say, we are both using Winamp and I personally want to stay with this.

Hmm, would I need iTunes for any updates etc then? Or can you install firmware updates without iTunes?

Also, what sort of videos does it play? Does it play videos in divx by any chance?

(i haven't got the iPod yet, getting it next week)

Well if you have WinRar or 7Zip or perhaps even WinZip try unpacking the iTunes.exe. There are several files in there and I believe one of them is called AppleSoftwareUpdate which I believe is the program for checking for updates to iTunes and iPods. Take that file out of the iTunes folder, install it and it should function I reckon.

As for Divx I don't think the iPod will play that but if you google or even search either this forum or the sound/mp3 forum you should find links to free divx>iPod video format convertors.

I used ipodlinux on an ipod mini a year or two ago. It couldn't load long songs (ie large files). And a lot of my songs are hour long mixes or whatever, so unless they've changed this, its a bit useless for me. Also, whats the chance of ipodlinux breaking my new ipod! :o?

I am not sure about updates but I only realised yesterday (lol, silly me), that there are no need for iPod drivers that come with the CD. I plugged in my iPod (in Vista) it installed drivers and then I loaded winamp and it recognised the iPod (no plugins required)!
