Hi guys. To cut a long story short, I just bought a nice new beast of a gaming laptop. It has a 17" IPS screen (LP173WF4-SPD1), which while bright and very colourful, has a uniform luminous 'glow', panel-wide, that makes the blacks look grey, and crushes detail. It is VERY distracting in games with dark scenes (you literally can't make out any fine detail and is really annoying me now. It is noticeably worse than my old laptop that also has a 15" LG IPS panel (LP156WF5-SPB1).

I have tried manually overriding settings with Nvidia control panel and:

  • Reducing gamma
  • Reducing brightness
  • Reducing contrast

However, it is still noticeable. Am I stuck with this? Shall I try and RMA, or would I likely get a panel that does exactly the same?:(

Apart from what you've already tried, there is nothing you can do to get rid of ips glow. It's a side effect of the panel technology unfortunately. However, that said, some screens have it far worse than others, and some are pretty good (my dell 29 superwide for example is good on the ips glow front.)

if it's really that bad I would considering getting rid, swapping out or trying something else.

Feel your pain mate. Having a monitor collected today for exactly the same thing - Lots of glow and crushing all detail in the shadows. No amount of OSD twiddling or even calibration helped, it's just a crap panel.

Ok thanks guys that's what I feared... maybe I got a bit of a lemon. Will contact the supplier and ASUS and see what they say... :)
