So I recently made the switch to a DOCSIS 3.0 modem, which has been getting me fantastic speeds of 125mb d/l - 30mb u/l via co-axial cable. Happy with the results. (I'm in the US)

However new modem is configured ready out the box with IPv6. Yes, I know i can switch off IPv6 in my local adapter.

I understand the internet is running out of addresses, and the need for IPv6, but how does that help me today? I mean with IPv4, i have an understanding of what's going on... Now when I ping google I get

Are there any real benefits to using IPv6 for your average user? Is there any improved security / speed ? Even though I'm not seeing any improved speed, so why have it turned on. At least IPv4 is easier to understand... and yes in 10yrs time when we're all forced to move to IPv6, i'll take the time to learn it, but for now, is there any real value apart for the Tier 1 networks ?

There is no benefit or drawback to the average user. The average user doesn't really care about IPv4 or IPv6 just only that they can get onto Facebook to see what their friends are doing.

IPv6 would be a steep learning curve but long term a better solution as then you won't be forced to upgrade. May be worth looking at a 4in6 or 6in4 (can never remember which way around you want) so you can access sites that aren't yet IPv6.
