My dad bought a ps3 as a home entertainment system however it's fallen at the first hurdle as it doesn't support IR so it won't work with pretty much any remote in existence, is there an adaptor that will allow it to work with a normal IR universal remote?

there is indeed one unit that i know of that can do what you want, but its in very limited supply and is not particularly cheap...

it works by accepting the IR signals, then converting them to bluetooth signals for the PS3 to understand... the device can do every single feature of the official remote and is already on the logitech database as a bonified device so works straight away :)

I ain't got one mind, i like the official remote :)

here you go: http://ir2bt.com/info.htm

The alternative of course is to get a BT enabled universal remote, and as awesome as they are they cost more than a house...

What a rip off, £100 and it doesn't even come with an ac adaptor or usb cable! I've heard that it's possible just to buy a usb to ps2 port adaptor for £5 and then buy a ps2 port to ir reciever.

Logic3 and Nyko both make a sub £15 USB IR dongle and remote combo for PS3. The remote just emulates PS3 button presses I imagine. You could just buy one of these and then teach your Harmony the same inputs?

However these solutions do not let you turn it on or off. The only way to do this is over Bluetooth which means official remote or a crappy looking BT>IR convertor.

I see this suggested in many places as well, with ghastly pictures of them stuck to PS3s :)

Why not, surely you just select the off button in the xmb? Anyway switching it on and off isn't a problem as your going to have to go upto the ps3 to insert/collect the disk anyway.

Off button in XMB is new, so presumably was not added when these remotes were made, which just seem to emulate normal, basic, PS3 controller functions. Maybe you can do a Macro of some sort to navigate to that button (Never used one of these remotes).

Thats what I meant, use the normal controller functions to select the off button in the xmb. I could use a macro to do that but I don't think it's worth it.

One thing to bear in mind if using receivers that plug into usb is the fact that you won't be able to switch the ps3 on with it, due to the fact (as we all know) that usb doesn't get power when the ps3 is off (same reason controller charging doesn't work)... so all in all, a proper IR > BT converter is the only real way to do it and have full functionality, with the added advantage that it is independant, can be hidden pretty much out of view and doesn't leave any unsightly wires going into the front of the PS3...

I looked at all the options, and decided that there will always be a harmony universal remote and a ps3 remote on the sofa ;)

I'm not bothered about turning it on or off really as you have to put in the disk anyway.
fair enough, the people who would like the on/off facilities are the ones who use the ps3 as a media centre a lot hence no disks ;)
