Connecting USB modem blocks LAN

The laptop is connected to the office printer and shared on the network, everyone on the network is able to use the printer with no problems..... until the modem is plugged into the laptop, when for some reason the laptop disappears from view and cannot even be pinged from the cmd console.

Laptop – Compaq nx7010
Modem – Samba75 (GPRS)

Today, after receiving an email from someone regarding a problem trying to install my Delta sound card, who said it could be an IRQ confllict issue....

I had a look at the IRQ's on the laptop and it seems that neally every piece of hardware on it has been assigned IRQ 10. Is this normal for laptops?

Could this be why i cannot use both the modem and the network card at the same time? If so, is there a way around this? I tried to manually edit IRQ's but after reading this:

On a computer that is running the Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL), you are not able to change a resource setting for a device in Device Manager.

i guess it isnt possible in XP.... or is it? (without reinstalling XP as a Standard PC)

I dont remember seeing any IRQ options in the Bios

Cheers
