Irratic clock speeds during gaming

Hi everyone,

Just received my Sapphire Vega 64 Nitro+ which I picked up through the amazing OCUK "Black Friday" deal :)

After having re-installed Windows and of course the Radeon Drivers, I'm noticing something very strange in games. My clock speeds seem to be getting limited / throttled at around 800-900 Mhz ad GPU usage spikes around all over the place (from 0% to 60%) in, for instance Call of Duty 4, and Battlefield 5 crashes 1-2 seconds after loading into any map (after having taken an abnormally long time to even load into the map in the first place).

The weird thing is that the Heaven Benchmark seems to be performing perfectly stable between 1560 and 1630 Mhz.

Any ideas what could be causing this?

Are you running stock clocks? What is the CPU doing? Is your PSU up to the job? I appreciate a benchmark is a decent stress test for the PSU though.

Tweaked around in Wattman a little now and the profile I've set up now is P6 - 1577 Mhz @ 1000 mV and P7 - 1642 Mhz @ 1050 mV. HBM2 - 1000 Mhz @ 975 mV. Fan speed set @ 900 min - 3300 target. Max temp @ 85 and Target temp @ 70. This all runs perfectly continuously stable on Heaven Benchmark at about 68 degrees celsius, and once I load up BF5, the core clock barely pushes past 1000 Mhz. Really frustraing :S

All 4 CPU cores hovering around 80's - 90's.

PSU is a 750 Watt Corsair Gold rated.

That's reasonably close to CPU saturation to be honest, I'd question whether the CPU is holding the performance back.

I'm starting to think so as well. Battlefield 5 singleplayer runs buttery smooth on 1440p at ultra presets at around 100fps average and when joining a 64 player multiplayer map it dropped to around 60-70 average. This would confirm the CPU bottleneck suspicion, right?

yup that sounds like a CPU bottleneck :( Heaven and other Benchmarks rarely push the CPU, hence the GPU ran at full speed.

Thanks, guess I'm going to delid my i5-4670k and try to push that baby as far as it can go ;)

or try to find an i7 second hand to give you some more threads :D

True, but they are surprisingly still pretty pricey here 2nd hand. Seems like a bit of a waste spending around 250euro on an "old" CPU, whereas for a bit more you can get an 8700K (of course, I'd have to get a new mobo + ram as well).

Even my 8086k at 5.2ghz runs up to 80% on all threads in bf5 at 1440 165hz. With it being at around 60-80%+ at all times.

I’d delid then overclock it, may keep you going a while longer yet as it can make quite the difference.

I’d agree probably best upgrading to 8700k or 2700x rather than forking out for an older 4770k/4790k.
