I have had my cheap advent laptop for about 2 years now, I wont be using it much, now I have built my new pc. It is this annoying "tech guys" popup that comes up everytime I start it up telling me i need to create backup dvd's, yes that right storing all 105gb of my data onto dvd's lol even though its all backed up on an external hd it still persists. I cannot find where this is on the computer anywhere, There is nothing in programs or task manager have searched it aswell still cannot find it. I wont be using this laptop much, mostly for portability but nethertheless it is still annoying and slows down the start up process a lot. It was bought from a competitor hence the "tech guys" pop-up:mad:

The rule is whenever you buy a prebuilt computer you should reformat it with standard media to remove all the trialware and bloatware manufacturers preinstall :). I would just format the whole thing to remove all manufacturers bloat.

chances are that any reinstall disks from advent will have all the bloat on them.

just uninstall the crap, better than nothing..

If you install using standard Microsoft media then you will get a vanilla install of XP/Vista/7 :). Just install using the serial key on your COA located on the bottom of the laptop. It's the long way of doing it but the best way IMO. Image your current install for recovery :).

The only thing is that the laptop actually came with no preinstalled software/bloatware. It is actualy a kind of generic laptop design that a few companies use that are assosiated with a competitor , I think E systems, E.I Machines and Advent all use the same design but with a different brand on the back. I will try reformating it, worth a try

If you're going ahead with the format/reinstall, might be an opportunity to properly identify the laptop and look for up to date drivers? For example, have a read through this thread.

Luckily you have backed up everything you need. I'm guessing most of these generic or ready-to-run computers come with everything on a single hard drive partition which would make a reinstall more tricky. More money for the tech guys when people ring up, I suppose.

That pop up isn't just a browser homepage, or simple program running from the usual HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run location, is it?

Be careful using a borrowed disk (XP/Vista etc..) to use your serial for a fresh install - there are different versions (of each) that use a differrent algorithms to verify your serial number (on the MS sticker on the bottom of your lappy).
Make sure its the right version supplied with your lappy

Next time it comes up I shal screen shot it, it is realy odd it isnt a homepage it is an actual popup that comes up (even if its not connected to the internet) and says "If you click no you will be reminded again" or you can click to go and back everything up ON TO DVD'S lol - that would take forever and cost lots of money in blank dvd's. There is no option to not do so it says " you will be reminded again" like theres no escape haha. I think reformatting will be the only option, Its not my main computer luckily thanks for the help everyone

If you are going to format:
Image your current install for backup purposes
Make sure you can locate all drivers
Check you have the right installation media

:)

MsConfig should also point you to the location that its using.. so you could actually delete/uninstall that crap from your laptop.
