Is 120hz lighter than 60hz?

I got my replacement on a BenQ XL2420T as the last one suffered banding and clouding issues with minor back light bleed.

My new one arrived and is MUCH better.

Now, i'm not sure if this is a problem or standard but on 60hz, blacks tend to be blacker especially full screen and more depth added to the black I see, say on Battlelog.

However, choosing 120hz sort of ups the brightness of the black so it's not as rich anymore. It's very minor. Also full screen on black, the black isn't as dark as it was, be it minor again.

Is this basically what 120hz does? I'm not sending it back because i'm sure it's not a fault, or it could be a placebo effect on me.

Also, is there a much quicker way of changing refresh rate? The idea I had was to have desktop use at 60hz, then let it auto change for games to 120hz. However, i'd like to use 120hz for how smooth the mouse looks, so maybe it's best changing to 60hz for watching a film. Is there a quicker way instead of right click, screen resolution, monitor, advanced?

Is there a reason you want the desktop at 60hz? Doesn't make sense to me. Window and mouse dragging are smoother at 120hz. I don't think there's a quicker way to change it as nobody really changes from one to the other so it hasn't been implemented.

The monitor sounds like it needs setting up. See the thread about the BenQ XL2420T in this section for levels.

+1. There's several changeable settings that make a huge difference. You probably need to change the Black EQ thing that is there for CS players. It makes blacks lighter so I'd start there.

Was your previous monitor using something other than TN i.e. an IPS monitor as they will have better colors than most TN monitors - its a bit of a trade off you pay for the smoothness of 120Hz... that said most will calibrate very decently my 120Hz panel with a couple of tweaks has gorgeous deep blacks and good overall color.
