I am still considering my next monitor, and after reading what feels like a library sized chunk of the internet i am still undecided :(

My current monitor is a Sammy 2032bw res is 1680x1050 max, i game most of the time, bf3, skyrim, fallout vegas, dead island are my main ones at the mo.

My card is a Evga gtx570 superclocked, i currently run bf3 on med settings and get between 80-130fps, but i would be moving up a resolution to 1920x1080p.

Would a 120hz monitor work below say 60fps and still be silky smooth or does it have to maintain a steady high framerate, thats what i really need to know as i have been leaning toward the new Benq 120hz when its released.

If not, what is the current best gaming monitor for £250 available right now, ips or TN panel, thanks

Sry for the longwinded post :D

If all else is identical a 120Hz screen will still be slightly smoother if you have FPS under 60Hz. The screen itself will still refresh @ 120Hz its just the GFX card will only supply different frames less frequently. However to get the majority of the benefit you do need to get above 60FPS. Then you will "see" the full refresh frequency of the GFX card.

BF3 on my overclocked 480 (similar to your card) at medium to high settings (to keep it around 120FPS min) looks amazingly smooth.

Recommended.

3D is a nice addition too.

Samsung 950 owner here I love gaming in 120hz amazingly smooth! One of the best upgrades I've ever done!

^ Agree. Would reccomend looking into 120hz for any gamer.

Also, if you use your pc to watch blu rays it's great too. There is a massive difference in watching fast paced movies on my 60hz monitor compared to the 120hz. The slow motion shots in transformers 3 are no longer required :D!

Going back to the 60hz is almost painful, constant motion stuttering.

I'd always though my eyes were knackered, but 120hz has saved me! <3!

The thing about 120Hz ignoring all the other benefits - even at 60Hz compared to most 60Hz panels the screen "stabalises" much much faster - do a fast 180degree turn on your average 60Hz panel and the screen is blurry for a moment as pixels aren't quite displaying the correct color level - after awhile your brain compensates for it and you don't really notice but it does cost you in terms of how quickly and efficently you can react to things in an fps game. Most 120Hz panels the time it takes the screen to stabalise on fast movement is much much shorter and hence you react to thing much better.

If you've always gamed on a TFT then you might not really notice it so much but anyone coming from a CRT will immediatly appreciate it.

Anyone else experiencing the same?
I don't see any reason why movies would look any better to be honest. They're almost always just under 24fps and 30fps at best? Even with 60Hz the screen is already refreshing twice as fast as it needs to - to show everything.
I'm not saying that's impossible but it sounds unlikely to need more than 60Hz to get the most out of movies.

120hz = Win.

After spending many hours on Star Wars it also makes my eyes feel a lot better.

Sounds like 120hz is the way forward, thanks for the replies you have eased my dithering on what to buy :)

Just need to buy the correct model now, can't afford the 950D way out of my budget :( will await any reviews on the new Benq and go from there.

Just bought a BenQ XL2410T 24" LED 3D 120Hz TFT Monitor for 233.41 to go with my 7970 gpu and love it.

Do you still use vsync on a 120Hz monitor?
What hapens if your fps dips below 60, does it feel sluggish? Can you notice differences between the 60-120 fps range?
