is 1gig enough?

What resolution do you game at?

To be honest 1GB is perfectly fine in most situations for a card of the GTX460's performance level. The 2GB models that are starting to appear are probably best suited to SLI set up's or people who need the extra VRAM for specific applications (photoshop, 3d modeling, CUDA etc...).

There will always be some games that run like crap (eg: Metro 2033) on full settings, but for a lot of games you should be ok. You should overclock your card too, GTX460's have insane headroom and you get a lot of extra performance with it.
