Is 2560x1440 enough?

Hi all,

I'm looking to upgrade from my 1920x1080 BENQ monitor to make the most of my 1080 when it arrives. I've been looking around at some of the monitors and am left pondering about 2560x1440 vs 3440x1440. I don't have the money to pour into an X34A or an equivalent, but i'm looking to spend around £500 on a monitor that'll keep me going for a while yet!

Does anyone have any suggestions? MUST be G-Sync as it'll be used for gaming a lot! I've been looking at this:

Any reply is much appreciated!

Ultrawide IPS 1440p is simply the best for gaming atm. However if you need gsync it's not possible at 500 notes. That TN @16.9 is as good as you'll get for 500 quid .

If you're really after the wow factor then that Dell isn't it imo. I think for £100 more the Acer one that's IPS and 165hz makes more sense, though ultimately with a 1080 you don't really need Gsync all that much and there are ultra-wide 1440p monitors <£500 available without it. Alternatively you could send back your 1080, get https://www.overclockers.co.uk/acer...-super-wide-curved-led-monitor-mo-090-ac.html and a Fury X. :P

Doesn't that monitor have flickering issues??

Keep the 1080 and get a ROG swift 144hz/Gsync. Gsync may not be AS critical at higher framerates but still makes it a much smoother experience

Rog swift is a good choice for your budget. I'd still be using mine happily if I'd not taken the plunge on 21:9.

There's 2 B grade Predator XR341CKB 34" 3440x1440 IPS 75Hz for £499.99 if you wanted to take a punt. No G-Sync though so actually useless really :)

I bought an XR3501 35" 21:9 for my sim rig and the screen was perfect so a bargain at £389.00 -40% reduction.

Otherwise the 1440p vertical res increase is the gain you'd notice more and maybe a higher refresh. The extra width is nice to have though.

The ASUS ROG Swift is looking attractive, I may be able to stretch to that.

Decisions decisions

2560x1440 is the gaming sweet spot from a fidelity to performance stand point, 3560x1440 is a very niche resolution and 4K is just to power hungry and doesn't offer a whole lot of detail over 1440P.

Now with 1080's 2560x1440P is a complete breeze to run and a 2560x1440 144Hz+ monitor is the way to go :)

2560x1440 is a sweetspot, gsync monitor choice though id still opt for the dell despite the fact that i own an ROG swift. Better customer support and it seems to have a lot less issues.

I just got the Dell, I went through quite a few ROG Swifts each with varying problems.

Even now it seems to be a 50/50 chance you'll get a Swift with duff pixels or some other issue.

Yep, i remember seeing the amount of issues you had in the swift owners thread. I bought mine second hand and so far it's been good. Strange though that the swift is such a lottery as it essentialy uses the same panel as the dell.

Yeah it was not a good feeling spending £650 at the time the Swift came out only to get monitor after monitor with varying defects.

AFAIK the Dell uses a slightly updated panel which may account for far less people having problems with them.

I`ve just bought and setup the Dell (replacing a 24" IPS Dell).

Very impressed so far. I was a bit concerned about going back to TN from IPS, but no real issue. Yes, there's the usual vertical colour shift if you move your head up and down, but that's a very minor thing which doesn't detract from the quality of the image and the effect that G-Sync has when running games.
