Is 550w enough for all of this.

MSI TWIN FROZR HD5850
I5 2500k (probably overclocked to about 4.2)
ASUS P67 PRO
4gb ram - perhaps 8
3 7200rpm harddrives, 1 dvd drive (I can reduce this to 1 harddrive and 1 dvd drive)
A good air aftercooler

did a quick power calculation here and it says 500W

however, power supplies get worse with age, and some 500W power supplies are better than others, so if you tell us what power supply you have, and how old it is, we'd be able to tell you if its ok or not.

personally i'd go for a new one with a little more power to give you some headroom for a few upgrades later on

get a OCZ stealthxstream 600w, or Bequiet L7 530w.

or ideally a XFX 650W PRO or XXX modular psu.

Okay, thanks guys! One quick question. If I go about using this power supply and it isn't enough would I be damaging any parts?

not 100% sure about that. as far as i know it would just mean they couldnt get enough power to operate at 100%

however, if your power supply dies, it is very likely to take something else with it, maybe everything. and with it being a 3 year old low quality PSU, and being asked to draw its maximum power almost constantly, the chances of it going in the next year are resonably high i would guess

stay away from the easy cool
i had a 700w ezcool and it only just had enuf connectors for my 5830 and everything else, also my mate had a 550w ezcool psu, is your silver by any chance? and no i wouldn't even think of using that to power a system like that for even a day as it is most likely to only have 1 pic-e connector like my mates.

stay clear of that psu no matter what epically if its 3 years old!

Get a 650W+ on a good brand and you'll be much better off. It's worth the £70 investment. You don't want to run an old banger of a power supply close to its limits.

Get a modular PSU if you have cable management problems or a small case.

A few things could happen.

1) The PC refuses to boot due to lack of power
2) The PC works OK but when stressed it crashes and/or graphic glitches happen
3) The PSU goes **** this and ka-booms

Option 3 can also include taking out the rest of your system parts!

Good quality PSUs rarely go to option 3, which is why everyone on this forum recommends a named brand (Antec, Corsair, Bequiet etc).

As to your system, the 530w Bequiet will do the job but a 600 to 650 watt PSU would be better (you'd be running at 75% ish of it's rated power)

It's an ATX-550 JSP with EZcool. I'd say it's about 3 years old now.

Replace it. It's likely to blow up and take your rig with it. It will not be outputting anywhere near it's claimed 550w either. EZ-Cool are terrible psu's. If you put that anywhere near that rig you are asking for big trouble. Buy a quality psu now!! There is no reason to skimp on a psu now as there are some very good ones on OCUK at the moment for very reasonable prices. Here are some examples:-

Be Quiet Purepower L7 530w

OCZ StealthXstream 2 500w

OCZ StealthXstream 2 600w

OCZ StealthXstream 2 700w

Thes new StealthXstreams are far better units than the originals and i have had a play with the 600w version. It seems to be a well built psu and is quiet in operation. Do not ask about the OCUK branded ones to save money as they are crap. The psu is not the place to save money.

Having a good power supply is a good investment. However, trying it out to see whether it will work is highely unlikely to damage anything. tbh cheap power supplies are like ticking time bombs, just waiting to go off lol. You would still be better off with a quality psu and it will last a long time, mine has lasted me from an 8800GTS to a 480GTX and has been rock solid.

Personally I think the ocz's psu's are a no no, iv'e had one before and it was not as great as I thought it would be and had it exchanged 4 times under warranty, then promptly sold it and got a Tagan, which has served me briliantly. Grab a 700/750w to allow for future gpu specs and you will be fine. Also worth spending on modular too imo.

Don't become one of the 'ive got a £1000 system and a £20 psu' crew lol;)

Like is said, these are completely different to the original OCZ's. They have been getting good reviews too. I had a original GameXstream which was a terrible psu but these new ones are much better. I got one for my son a few months ago and it's been problem free.

Should I go for 550w or a 600w?

i run the following:

ASUS P8P67
i5 2500K @ 4.5GHz
GTX470
4x2GB DDR3
3 hdd's
1 DVDRW
2x140mm fans & 2x120mm fans

all on a brand new OCZ stealthstream 600W with no problems power wise at all.

Also, VoG. Am I right in assuming that your mobo is the PRO version?

Haha, just realised there is a standard version. Disregard that.
