Hello

I bought and built my first ever pc last October (former mac user) and my friend recommended the hawk MSI 5770 which I bought for £130 from OCuk along with my AMDsystem.

Looking on the site now I can see the same price I paid for 6000+ series cards and can't even find the one I bought. I've increased the clock using AMD overdrive from 875 to 980 mhz and memory from 1200 to 1285 so think I've got good performance. I'm playing all my games on ultra settings with good fps, playing the witcher 2 on high rather than ultra is the only one I've wimped out on.

My question really is will buying a 6000+ series card now give me a massive performance increase or should I stick with this and save 200 odd quid?

Thanks!

can I ask what makes it better? what aspect of the card is better? not being funny. I find all the clock settings and mhz confusing.

When looking at ATI cards its the Processing Cores that in a very vague fashion determine the power of the card.

The 5870 has 1600 Processing Cores, whilst the 5770 has 800.

Another big determinant of gpu power is Memory Bandwidth, your see the 5870 is also twice as fast in this area too.

Using a 19" LCD tv at 1280*768

I am happy with this at the mo, but I'm thinking of getting a 32" TV and use my 19" as a second monitor. If I did that would it be wise to upgrade?

Also could I buy the 5870 and run it with crossfire with the 5770?

Might need to upgrade my 500w PS though for that...

It's ok he edited the thread. that wasnt my question between the 5770vs5870. it looked like he said the 5870 was better than the 6950. but it doesnt matter. the thread has been edited or maybe i misread it. No big deal.

you cant run a 5870 and a 5770 in crossfire.

you need two 5770's. i was thinking about it and was spoken out of it. 5770's are £70 on ebay, used. So I could buy a card for £140 and sell my old one. And so on and so on for years.

Depends on the resolution of the TV you are thinking of. If it is the same res, then you wil get the same performance.
I used a 5770 on a 720p tv for a few years and maxed everything, but when i got a full HD tv i started struggling on a few games so i upgraded to a 5850, and then could max everything on there.
Anything 5850 upwards should do a great job at 1080 imo.:)

Also, if you are considering crossfire make sure that your mobo can support it.

Just keep the 5770, it's a brilliant card, had it myself and played everything on 1080p great for me :). After you buy the TV, if you notice you need the extra power then wait for the end of the year, the next gen cards should be out then.

You've answered your own question really :)

Pretty much if his new TV is the same res, but if it is higher then it's a pretty valid question.
5770 is by no means a bad card either way though. If you don't want to max out every upcoming game it will do you fine.
It's not as if performance will drop to anywhere near poor levels at 1080 on any game anyway tbh. Will still be well above average

Why not crank up the clocks some more. The msi cards are one of the best 5770 for clocking as the cooling is quality. Google

!~Club 5770~!

and read the details you will get a lot more out of the card if you have decent airflow.

I'm in the same boat. I got a 1080p monitor recently and still have my 5770 512mb. I keep wanting to get something better, like a 5850 or 5870, but my 5770 (even with the lacking VRAM), still holds up very well.

The 5770 is still a very capable card especially at resolutions under 1920x1080.

I say wait until it starts struggling very noticably before considering an upgrade. :)

I'm in same line of thinking as nyoron. my 4890s are about par with 5770s and keep seeing good deals on 58/68xx cards but tbf I game at 1920x1080 with eye candy turned up and I haven't found something to really cripple my cards even in single mode......the 5770 is great, you got an xfire board? as they scale REALLY! well in dual card config
