Is a 15 second ethernet pause normal?

As subject really - I have two Win7 comps connected via ethernet cable to the same group on a gigabit network, running through a router, with various folders shared.

When I try and browse to a folder across the network, everything functions correctly, but only after a massively annoying 15-18 seconds pause. This can't be normal surely? Is it?! If anyone knows a solution to eradicating it, I'd love to hear, waiting for it 20 times a day on average is wearing thin! Thanks...

this happens everytime you try and access it, or just once ?

pauses like this are sometimes a result of slow NetBios lookups, running a WINS server on the network can help on this

althou generally u shouldn't really get much delay anyways

have u tryed access the pc directly using the IP address ?

just goto run, and type \\ipaddress
with the ip address of the computer u want to access and see if its still slow

Does that machine have hard drives set to go to sleep after x minute of inactivity?

If not, try browsing to it directly to a share..

Ie

Start, Run

\\pcname\sharename 'press enter'

Somtimes browsing the root share takes an age

Hi guys thanks for the help! Sorry about the missing detail. It happens the first time only, then the connection is good, although after a period of roughly 20 mins or so it needs to do it again. It can't be the harddrives going to sleep though, as both machines are in constant use, it also happens both ways between computers with the exact same symptoms. I will try the direct IP access once it has phased back out again! Thanks...
