Is a 285k really such a bad cpu for a gaming pc? To pair with a 5090 and a z890 aurus master? Was unaware about the issues relating to this cpu, any input appreciated

A 14600KF runs it close and that costs around ~£200. Best case: it comes out ahead of the 9700X, which is ~£300.

Not terrible, but yeah, why?????

No.

Now, yes.

any input appreciated

If you are throwing money at a wall with a board like Z890 Aorus Master etc. then I can see why you'd look at an overpriced Intel CPU, but if you actually want to get the most from your mortgage priced GPU get a 9800X3D, yes they aren't crazy expensive but it doesn't mean it isn't good/best. ;)

This is why I promote brand agnostism, as I cannot for the life of me understand why the OP would go the route he has for gaming without bias.

For 2k/4k playable fps, anything will work, even Pentium dualcores.

I don't know why you'd pick that CPU though. A better pick might stave off an upgrade for another generation or 2 or 3 1.

Unless you're earning a living with your computer, and you aren't because you wouldn't need to ask this, just get a x3D.
