Is a 7950GX2 overkill

Hi guys.

Is the 7950 overkill or is it worth it? I have decided to upgrade my 6800gt to a 7series but I either want the 7900GTX or a 7950gx2. My Dad has agreed to pay half the non VAT price which means I will only pay half aswell. I will also be buying another gig of ram and a 200GB+ HDD as I have now ran out of space on my 70GB HDD :p . I will be selling my 6800GT after I get a new card to help cover costs. :) And I love playing at 1600 X 1200 or 1280 X 1024 on my 19" CRT monitor.

My current PC is:
AMD 64 3500+ @ 2.6GHZ (had it a 2.8 stable)
1GB PC3200
DFI Lan Party nf4 SLI-DR
6800GT PCI-E

Whats your take on this guys? I have £160+ to spend on a GFX card myself but my dad will make up the difference as said above:confused:
Thanx

If you can afford it, go for it.

If you're going to get one card get 7900GTX if you're going to get 2 go for 7950GX2.

In my eyes the GX2 would be overkil, you should do fine with a 7900GTX, its just wasted talent if you get a GX2.

Welcome to the foums BTW... :)

I'd be inclined to agree with the above. The relatively small price differential between 7900GTX and 7950GX2 means that the latter is prolly the better bet, if funds will allow. Reviews have the GX2 ahead of the GTX. That said, not all games work well with SLI, so make sure the games you want to play work well the GX2 before going for that option. Also, make sure your mobo is on the Nvidia's list of approved mobos.

The 7950GX2 isn't overkill, it's actually a very nice card and I would buy one if I had the money and didn't have a CPU that would bottleneck it into the stone-age. It's a horrible gimmick, but it's a great graphics card that beats an SLi 7900GT system by a fair amount for the same price.

get the gx2 if possible, but make sure you run ALL games maxxed out at 1600x1200 resolution otherwise youre wasting a lot of power there, and thats not cool

LOL that wont be 2 hard 4 me 2 do. I will go for the 7950GX2 I think.
Thanx guys you help a lot. I was thinking about the 7950GX2 as basically you get another 7900GTX for £60 on top of a single 7900GTX. :D

Jsut make sure its compatible with your motherboard if your going for the 7950 GX2, but the 7950 GX2 at those resolutions is way overkill , i would'nt get one unless i was running uber resolutions on a 30 incher (ohh err missus) as it can't be touched at those resolutions with maxed eye candy, but 1600x1200 or 1280x1024 then id just go for the 7900 GTX, the 7950 GX2 will also be seriously bottlenecked on a 3500+ i would have thought to. :)

Welcome to the forums btw. :)

Well I have my PROC at 2.8GHZ atm so if it is bottlenecked sod it lol. :) And the 7900GTX wont be able to play 1600 X 1200 with AA soon with the newer games will it? I want something to deffo last me till DX10 in 2007 when they have ironed out all the bugs. And a DFI nf4 SLI-DR is a pretty well know enthusiast board is it not? It says on the nvidia DFI nf4, infinaty.

A 7950GX2 would be a waste at 1600x1200, even my X1800XT 256MB can play Oblivion quite comfortably at that resolution if I turn some stuff down.

2560x1600 sounds a bit more reasonable. ;)

Not trying to be controversial or anything, but I think 1600x1200 is just where 7950GX2 starts to become worthwhile. Of course, it comes into its own at 1920x1200 and higher.

getting a new card to run at that res or higher without turning stuff of is a waste?
i dont think so.

the faster the card the better.
Thats my motto aswell. Im gonna go for the 7950 but im not sure which one. Gainward or Asus as they are cheep and I have had good experiances with my old 5900U 256mb. Also do any companies give discounts if I buy a 250GB HDD and another 1GB PC3200 ram along with the 7950GX2? My dad is gonna pay through his company.

Thanx all. :D
