is a mid-bass speaker/sub the solution to my problem?

Hello,

Possibly a bit of an unusual one?

My car has provision for two speakers - one front, one rear - as standard.

Long story short - I have two small speakers mounted in the front, they work, they sound ok at lowish volumes, but they need some help.

I can fit two more 10cm drivers in the rear shelf, OR I have a single 6" hole already. Can't find a dual voice coil speaker in that size but could probably make a 6.5" one fit if I had to. Maybe make up some standoffs or use a bit of MDF or something.

But I see dual voice coil mid-bass/subwoofer speakers on Amazon and similar places... as it's only to fill the cabin a bit better and provide a bit of mid and bass so the fronts don't struggle so much, is this a viable option?

I don't have an amplifier and don't want to fit one as the car only has a dynamo at the moment, not an alternator, and that's not changing just yet. I don't need the car to be really loud, but the fronts are struggling a bit and they need a nudge.

Do they work un-amplified? Would it need boxing in? (because I could box it in underneath easily enough).

Anyone used one?

Cheers :)

It might work. Probably isn't going to do a whole lot. What's the output of your current headunit? I'm guessing it's going to be 4x50W peak so around 15W RMS per channel.
Some small mid-bass speakers are happy with no enclosure. Just read the specs on the items you're looking at.

Yeah it's just your regular aftermarket 4x50 HU, that's my main concern is that they're all going to be intended to be amplified.

I may just put some more normal 10cm units in, it'll be easy enough as there are holes there and would only need to add screw holes.

Was thinking more of just filling in the bottom end a little so the fronts don't have to over work so much.

Cheers
