Hey,
I'm finding that my tiny 180GB Macbook Pro hard drive is becoming full far too often. I have an external drive but it's dedicated to TimeMachine backups. So, I was thinking of either:
1. Taking the MBP to the local Apple shop and getting the hard drive upgraded (third party shop but authorised dealer).
Cost: 320GB Hard drive (£70) + Fitting (£30) = £100
2. Buying some form of RAID1 system. It must be hotswoppable. I'd hate for a drive to fail and the hardware setup meaning I'd have to spend days trying to figure out how to rebuild the array.
At first I was looking at Drobo. However, it looks overpriced for what it does. The QNap TS-209 II is cheaper and comes with way more features.
Cost: QNap TS-209 II (£240) + 2 x 1TB HDDs (£80 each) = £400
I'm the only person who would use the NAS atm as I'm living away for Uni. It would be great to move all my important data on to an external drive so I can access it all easily on my PS3. The only problems are that I've tried media servers in the past and streaming quality is awful. I usually end up just using my memory stick.
I will be moving back and it would be nice to share all my data between the rest of the family and the PS3 connected to the main TV in the living room. I'd split the NAS in to two partitions and keep it next to my computer, connected via USB and to the network via Ethernet. One partition for TM and the other for storage.
What do you guys reckon? It's a massive price difference but I'm thinking long term.
