Is a new GPU worth it?

I've got an AMD X2 4200+ running at 2.65GHz with 4GB RAM and and an 8800GTS 512MB under Windows 7 64bit, running at 1920x1080 resolution.

I've recently played Starcraft 2 and had another bash at WOW, and the frame rates are struggling a bit. I also want to be able to play Metro 2033, and Skyrim when it comes out.

I keep contemplating a 6950, or maybe a 560ti, but don't know if its worth it with the current CPU.

I hope to move to a 2500k based rebuild later in the year, so should I wait until then and buy all the bits at one? The GPUs may be cheaper , or the new 7000 series Radeons may also be out.

So, wait or buy?

you could probably upgrade the GPU to get a substantial increase in gaming potential. just make sure that you have a good enough PSU. you can then upgrade the CPU to something like a 655 BE.

For Starcraft 2 and WOW, you'd be in a more urgent need of CPU/platform upgrade than graphic card, not that I'm saying 8800GTS 512MB is fast enough.

Thanks,

I suspected my CPU was the main problem, even though a new GPU will give me some headroom I suspect its not going to be pushed enough by the CPU, so probably best to wait and update both at once.
