I'm running ABP, and there's an option for "Allow some non-intrusive advertising". Make sure that's unticked as some advertisers are paying ABP to get onto that list.
microsoft, google and a host of other companies have paid Ad block plus to unblock some of their "non intrusive" adds it was recently reported in some techy news sites. The kicker is if you're using different filters then you should be fine, update and add a few lists (fanboy list / easylist)
Funnily enough, I had to help my Nan remove Adblock from Chrome earlier this evening and install Adblock Plus instead, because it was completely preventing Facebook from loading.
First time using Windows Remote Assistance too, worked rather well.
ABP is pretty heavy and you can feel its effects more on low end systems. µBlock on the other hand is considerably lighter and allows the borwser to load just as fast as if it didn't have an adblock installed. It uses the same filters as the other more common adblockers too. Link here on a comparison: https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock#performance
Still in beta but it seems to do as well as AB/ABP. Before that, I was a hardcore ABP user for years .
ABP does use a lot of ram but i can't say i've noticed any effect on low end systems. just to give you some idea of how low, i often browse the web with a thin client pc with the most awful VIA cpu inside. it's so weak i can't even play low res flash videos from bbc news or youtube (and it's not the internet, html5 video is fine).
i just tried ublock and it still uses a lot of ram but maybe a bit less than ABP. i'll certainly stick with it for a bit to see if it blocks all the ads on sites i usually frequent.
As for performance it's more noticeable when loading up Firefox after you turn the PC on, and a little less noticeable on ad heavy sites. As for RAM usage you'll notice the difference more when you have loads of tabs open.
i think i'm going back to ABP from ublock. i use ABP to manually block some images and ublock appears to support this feature but you can see the image for a split second before it hides it. i'd rather take the hit of a bit more ram usage with ABP not to see that.
