is an FX-4000 series better than an athlon x4 860k?

not for me as im happy with what i have, i was thinking of building another budget amd build(£100), but for my mums partner to try out to maybe replace his aging and very slow viiv q6600 xps 420 system.

AFAIK,it probably is if it is a Piledriver based one,but I am not sure how much faster it is in theory. Having said that an Athlon II X4 845 is only £40 brand new too.

It might be also worth considering adding a bit more RAM to the Q6600 system and moving over to a small SSD.

thanks for reply.

i havent seen a fx 4000 series cpu specifically, im just thinking cheaper than an fx 6 core and i havent seen any specific motherboards, just researching.

i did originally think of upgrading the xps, i gave him my 2gb gt 610 as an improvement over an old hd 2600 and i did think to upgrade his 4gb standard memory to 8gb which i think is the max, but finding decent price 2gb ddr2 and needing 4 of them hadnt been as easy to source like before, not to mention he runs 32bit windows 10 for some reason.

as for an ssd, i was going to salvage the 64gb kingspec from my itx system as i havent sold that system yet, but typical of his dell it only has 2 sata ports which has 2x500gb hdds connected to which he needs regardless of one having the os on the one which means i would have to find a sata expansion card which at £20 i dont see justifiable.

for how much i could spend on upgrading it, i would probably be better off with a whole build using older but better parts, ive already seen a brand new cheap brand atx case for under £25, i was going to use my supernova in it as this is going to come out of my pocket, so want to keep costs down as much as possible.

to be fair, its not my computer to upgrade, so i wouldnt entertain the idea of any sort of cpu upgrade or really want to throw money at it, i dont have to build an amd system, im used to intel myself, but find my system very good and does what i want regardless of age and being amd, so was just an idea in my head, he would probably prefer intel still unless it was a ryzen, but he wont pay that sort of money lol.

Ssd on a pcie expansion board would be my choice.
PCie x1 to sata ssd adapters I thought were pretty cheap.

or replace the HDDs for a single 1TB drive.

I wouldn't bother replacing the graphics card if it works, has the connectors he needs and isn't noisy.

FX-43xx would be Piledriver, whereas Athlon X4 860K would be Kaveri. They have the same number of cores and are very similar clock speeds, so I imagine the latter is faster considering it's 2 generations newer. AMD did make decent IPC improvements to the Bulldozer architecture over the years, it's just that it started so far behind they still couldn't catch Intel.

Not sure I'd buy either though.

The 860K would probably be the quickest, although you could probably go with something like a A12 APU and use that as low cost move to AM4.

A Q8400 would be a downgrade BTW.

thanks for replies.

even though he is tech minded as he works in that sort of department i dont think he would be wanting to change to a 1tb drive, hes stubborn which is why i want to build one from scratch, but keeping his drive setup, just with an ssd to boot windows instead.

i know im talking about old tech in the form of the FX processors, but hes had his dell for years, so i think its time to replace it.

although as i type this my mum did point out he would like me to improve his dell, so maybe i will just do that and see how he gets on, other than train simulator and some sort of 2D/3D modelling or whatever it is, he doesnt game and both him and my mum use it for general and work related stuff, just really slow lol.
