Is an old Jaag a terrible idea?

I'm getting a serious hankering for an XK 4.2 coupe, I know they are old but just love the look of them. My dad had an S type, and although I was never a fan of the looks it was a lovely car to be in with a some serious poke. He always seemed to be having various issues with it though.
Is it a silly idea, after all we are talking 11-12 year old cars here, but there are a fair few about still with under 100k miles for under £12-13k...
It would be a daily driver though, and I probably do around 8k miles a year nowadays. I'm not young either, so insurance shouldn't be a huge problem...

I heard someone saying they are money pit.

For instance, it will cost thousands for replacing fuel pump, because of the complicated design.
Not sure if it is true or not, as I have never owned them myself.

I know someone who owns a 2003 V6 X-Type he bought for a few £100, with well over 100k miles on it. Runs fine but OFC nothing else works on it (AC, heated seats, etc) as all the toys just break because it's not Japanese. So he is going to roast this summer.

It's the older XK8 which people think will shoot up in value. Because it's the prettiest.

They’re generally fine provided you get a good example that’s been well cared for, and you keep up with the preventative maintenance (changing gearbox oil, getting air suspension checked if you suspect a leak rather than leaving it and letting it burn out the pump etc etc).

It also helps to have a garage working on it who knows their stuff. I’ve had 3 old Jags and the only issue I ever had was when one developed an electrical problem which was incorrectly diagnosed by a supposed “specialist”. Took it to another place and they fixed it in half an hour for £200. Other than that, they were very cheap to run and I’d have one again without question if I didn’t have to drive on dirt tracks most weeks.

That cannot be the prevailing experience of owning an old jag.

No, because a lot of people buy bottom of the market examples and only spend money on them when they have to get them through their MOT. Same for any luxury car really.

Heavy on fuel, tyre wear also, you’ll need a good independent who knows his stuff, the electrics can / will play up.

Lovely things but not cheap to run as a daily especially as years pile on.

Yes it’s a silly idea but, so long as you’ve got your eyes (and wallet l!) open then you’ll enjoy it assuming your an enthusiast and are willing to put up with the downside of owning an old expensive to run when new car.

I bet most of the parts that break are japanese or from established names. Having gotten fairly to grips with my Disco, most of the parts have actually very little to do with Landrover.
