Is any i5 under 2500k good upgrade from i3?

i know when I had my i3 4160 something like an i5 4430 or something was pretty much on par, would the same be said for the older generation aswell?

Not seen to buy as such, but have seen a 2400s for around £20 and a 2300 for few quid more, now while I haven’t actually got my system running yet to know how it runs, with how cheap those quads are now, I could make another quad system for myself on the cheap, the veriton doesn’t have any OC options as you’d expect so any k is pointless, but as it’s an H61 chipset this board may potentially fit the i7 range which okay are not the cheapest, but might be better?

If I’m honest I don’t know what processors fit to what family, but thanks for the in put, however I assume you might mean something like the 3770 or whatever the i5 versions are?

A an i5 2400 gor £20 is a bargain although if you didnt see much gains between a dual core i3 and quad core i5 its probably not worth upgrading.

Thanks for that, I know a quad is better than a dual, but for the Haswell, the board I had supported decent overclocking, just everything was too expensive, now I’ve got an older gen i3 system with no OC then for prices like that 2400s it might be worth just to have a 4 core processor, I just never had anything between 775 & haswell to know how all the architecture fairs as time goes by.

Sandybridge was Intel's last big jump. Everything between than and now is very close in performance with the exception of some of the Devils Canyon chips that got clock a few hinder Mhz higher than the equivent Haswell, Broadwell and Skylake chips.

Check you're motherboard's CPU support list. You may need to update the BIOS before slipping a new chip in there if the BIOS is older than the CPU

Just tried to look up your system, but couldn't find a CPU support list, or a motherboard model to save my life. There did seem to be an i5-3220 and 3330 model however :)

thanks for replies.

i havent looked up any bios updates yet, if im honest ive only installed windows and did updates and started putting some of my games/apps and driver for 5850 within the last 12-24 hours so i havent really used it for gaming yet, but before i buy another cpu i will check first as if i can find a real bargain i7 by end of the month i might get one of those instead, 4 core 8 thread might come useful for a system with no OC options.

as for the system, yeah for the week before i got the system i had to type i3 m290 to find anything, but cruical ram&ss upgrade site only tells me its an H61 and cpuz doesnt say anything different, i need get piriform speccy installed again, but this is the list im going by for now http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/mb-Intel_(chipsets)/H61_Express.html and as all the i5 listed have the same 6mb L3 cache, all have turbo and are not HT then i cant see any reason to go beyond the 2300 really unless i really need more than 3.1ghz(2300 turbo figure), same applies to the i7 range.

The I7 3770k is the best cpu for that motherboard/socket. Has 4 cores 8 threads.

Okay cheers for that, I won’t get one though simply because it be stupid money and as I can’t overclock there’s no point spending too much, wouldn’t the other i7 models do just as good locked wise?

I would say an i5 3570k is a good upgrade from your i3, a nice 4 core unlocked processor, failing that a i5-3330 is a nice locked quad core, I've used both in the past (currently on a 3570k until I sort my new 8600k upgrade out which just arrived). I have a couple of 3330's on the MM at the moment.

cheers for that, however as i have mentioned, the board in the veriton is standard issue meaning for this system no OC options at all, which is fine as the division on this system is fairly okay to play and managed a perfect couple hours on anno 2205 on medium settings just to make it easier @ full screen 1920x1080, though stutters at cut scenes so aside from having to buy yet another graphics card lol if to keep my max res, then a locked quad should do me just fine, but regardless of speed figures, what does the 3330 offer over the 2300/2400(s)/2500s???

ah okay, to be honest unless i get lucky for a bargain 970 by end of the month or get even luckier for a 1060 at christmas i dont think i will need to worry about 3.0 support, not for this system anyways, i will be saving up for cheap system round ryzen 1200 as other than seeing cheap 1150 motherboards, theres no reason to swap the acer out with decent upgrade path already, i will just want the cheapest decent quad i can find.
