Is any wireless router suitable for my sons needs?

Hi

My sons at Uni and has wired networking in his room supplied by the uni.

However, while there's supposed to be wireless as well, it's very bad.

He wants the wireless networking for his tablet. I was thinking he could simply get a wireless router and set up his own wireless network in his room with the router plugging into the Uni network port (standard rj45)

Am I correct in thinking almost any wireless router would be capable of this please?

Many thanks

Joe

Any wireless cable router should be able to do it. He'll have to connect the routers WAN port to the port in his room.

It might be wise to ask the IT staff at the uni for permission before doing this.

The router might be blocked if he has already connected a device to the port in his room and the uni is using some sort of MAC address authentication.

Why would you need to use a WAN port? why not just use a LAN port and create your own wireless LAN?

Unless the university do some sort of MAC address blocking from their side, and you will need to supply your MAC

Would be the same as just using a switch in your room I would have thought to connect more devices.

Maybe he's only allowed to connect one device to the port in his room. By default, his router will attempt to dish out IP addresses to the rest of the uni LAN if he hooks up a LAN port instead of the WAN port.
