Is anyone else getting really tired of this whole speeding thing ?

Speed cameras are useless at educating people and at stopping dangerous driving- but they are good at revenew generation. Police prescence on the roads is much much better - they can see what the speed cameras cannot see, tailgaters, dangerous driving (NOT necessarily driving over the speed limit) and people using mobile phones furthermore they can use their professional DISCRETION - something which is sorely missed IMO.

Driving at the speed limit requires very little distraction from looking at the speedometer - you can "feel" when you're doing 30/40/50mph - well certainly I can, I think maybe riding a bike helps.

Speed cameras only cause danger to people who drive over the limit and stamp on the brakes or get distracted by talking on their phones etc...

I seldom stick to the speed limits, but I don't drive at a totally inappropriate speed either, and I slow down outside schools and in places which lack visibility - such as parked cars etc...

Speed cameras are too black & white - which as we all know, life doesn't work like that. Bring back the cops I say.

I wish more money was spent on trying to catch motorists using their mobiles whilst driving.. Seems to be getiing worse too.. Some bloke cut right across a junction whilst on his phone the other day. Good job i saw him early enough otherwise he's have had me off the motorbike.

This is very true. Riding motorbike also makes you more aware of your sorroundings..

haha check out this gem of a site, he hates speed cameras even more than me!

"The image below shows a potentially dangerous camera. This Gatso is immediately behind the 40mph signs on the approach to Tittensor in Staffordshire. At this point the limit drops from 60mph to 40mph, forcing everyone to brake sharply for the camera. What this picture doesn't show you is that in the right hand lane, the camera is obscured by the sign. So a driver who hasn't been here before won't see the Gatso until they are right behind it. This sort of location for a camera just isn't sneaky, it is down right dangerous with potentially fatal consequences. The idea behind this location is to maximise revenue, by catching out drivers."

Picture is out of date now. The 40 limit has been moved further away, so you've been in the 40 limit for probably 300 to 400 metres before the camera. Those 40 signs have gone and the camera is orange now.

I was coming back along the a30 at ~ 5am the other morning

completely clear... can see for miles, no other traffic

and you get this:

Site39.jpg

Straight road
No Traffic (at the time)
downhill
over the crest, so not easily viewable

almost got caught by 3 that morning :(

When I first moved to Australia I could not figure out why 99.9% of all motorists were sticking to the speed limit. Then I was done twice in a week for being slightly over the speed limit (i.e. about 5mph) and received a hefty fine (more than the UK) for each one. I then realised why people were sticking to the speed limits, there are cameras, cops and unmarked camera cars all over the place and you stand a very good chance of getting done if you even thought about breaking the speed limit.

Having said that, driving is safer, people do not appear to get wound up in their cars and yet the traffic moves smoothly.

I ride a 1200cc bike and find it no problem keeping to the speed limits here (mostly) and I believe the strictly imposed limits make my riding into/home from work safer.

I've done the 150mph autobahn thing in my youth and now I'm quite happy sticking to the limit.

Most of the time in the UK, getting done for speeding is more a failure on your observation and roadcraft skills rather than anyone being sneaky and being out to get you.
