Ive been doing some research on the net into changing my current Z906 setup, i came across the Rokit speaker range mainly the RP5 G2 speakers, the reviews seem to rave about them. They have an inbuilt amp so that would mean i wouldn't need a sopund processor as i only plan to run 2 front speakers, a centre and a sub. Rokit also do a sub range.

Apparently the sub also has a built in amp, what i wanted to ask as well is with the sub having outs own built in amp how would that work with the speakers as they have their own power ON/OFF switch, Rokit also do a similar passive speaker, would that be better to run with the sub ?

Just any info on Rokit speakers would be ideal.

They are studio monitors meaning the frequency response is meant to be flat, not sure how they would work for a normal user you might not enjoy it since everything won't be made to sound nice so if a track is low quality or mixed badly etc then you're going to hear it pretty clearly :p

So if you produce music then yes they are not bad as you get an accurate response ;)

What dacads said.

Only I will also add that seeing as KRK don't make a centre monitor then adding a a different one might be little "errr". You definitely don't want to mix monitors with standard speakers (at least not outputting at the same time). And normally in most home cinema setups only the rears/sides tend to be different manufactures.

Also you will probably find that if you are going the monitor route you won't need a sub. The Rokits at least have a fair amount of bass to them.

As for your question about about mixing active speakers with a active sub. You should be fine as the sub outputs balanced XLR. It probably is a bit of overkill though.

But really I guess we would need to know what you plan on doing with the speakers. Producing then I would say stick with 2 speakers and if they are pretty far apart then add a centre. But if you are watching movies, gaming, listening to MP3s then get a nice 3 speaker setup and stay away from monitors. Bit of a strange one though as Normally people stick with a left and right and a sub or just go the 5.1 route. Which makes me thing you probably are producing as it is nice to have a centre speaker in a studio.

If you want a centre then it's probably best to stick with hi-fi kit, i.e. a receiver, stereo speakers (bookshelf or floorstanding), a centre speaker, and a powered sub.

If you want monitors, also have a look at Yamaha and Adam, as the KRK monitors are not the be-all-and-end-all of monitors by any means.

If you want to know more about how to specifically connect the gear together you'll need to list some models. We don't know what the audio source is, or which monitors or sub you're looking at. Usually they have a choice of XLR or 1/4" jack, the latter being either mono (unbalanced) or stereo (balanced). If none of this makes sense I suggest you read up some more.

As an example, I picked up some Yamaha HS80Ms recently. My DAC has a stereo jack output, so I use a stereo jack to 2x mono jack cable, one into each monitor.

And they are great to listen to, ignore these people who say it'll sound too "analytical" for casual listening.

The Matrix,

I would urge you to look at active monitors rather than passive speakers as the amplifier is specifically designed, built and tweaked to drive the speaker cabinets with the former.

I have just done a massive upgrade in my studio and went and auditioned about 30 different speaker sets at various pro audio shops over the last week (including all the KRK Rokits and other models).

Obviously, speaker selection is a subjective thing. However, there is science behind the construction, speaker design, component selection and build quality that has varying degrees of impact upon the overall sonic character of a loudspeaker.

With this in mind, it was reassuring to note that my 'golden ears' (not my words!) are still in touch with the common consensus on what sounds 'right'.

The speakers that really caught my attention this week were:

Genelec 8040As (I already own a pair)
Focal Sound CMS65 (these are fantastic monitors!)
Neumann KH120As (Wow, just wow!)

Obviously, were talking semi-serious money for this kind of quality but I really do think that if you are committed to sound quality you should give these a listen.

Otherwise, I've always liked the Alesis MKOne Active MKII (?) Not sure of product name...

But yer, go active man!

Thanks for all the detailed replies, its appreciated.

The speakers will be mainly for watching movies and listening to music, i have an AV type setup with my pc in my bedroom so its great for late night movies, watching live sport and listening to music etc.

I won't be producing any music apart from me trying to play the guitar which believe me its woeful listening :D
