Lol sorry most unstable thing in the world is your ex girlfriend and your from Birmingham sounds about right to me 
Battle.net is probably one of the more stable online gaming related things I've used, up there with Steam.
Games For Windows Live... erugh. Who ever came up with that, and continues to make out that it's a good idea needs putting down. Release a patch so that GTA IV can work without it. Please.

Well I played WoW for a couple of years and hardly ever had an issue so I'd say their servers are exceptional. Planned maintenance is definitely a good thing.
It is annoying though if you're in the middle of something and you get a warning reminding you that there will be a shutdown, but I can't blame Battle.net for my own poor memory. Not sure if the announcements or motd is something you get with SC2?
