John Bercow's private secretary has accused Bercow of bullying him.
John Bercow's private secretary seems to have served for 30 years in the Royal Navy before becoming a secretary.

Presumably the sensitive approach portrayed by Gunnery Sergeant Hartman in Full Metal Jacket was not the norm in the British Royal Navy.

I'm not sure it matters what your former occupation was, you shouldn't need to put up with bullying in the workplace.

Shouting and swearing, I'm not condoning it but I always assumed this went on in Westminster. If you don't know how to handle that environment then I can't see how you'd be successful.

I took it to mean that even someone who is presumably not a stranger to a macho gruff environment having gone through military training felt that his behaviour amounted to bullying. In my experience that takes some doing. Military folk I know like a good private whinge but rarely do so publically or officially.

Though if I've got wrong, you're right. Previous employment of a particular type does not make bullying more acceptable.

The problem is actually proving it. I work for a family business and am currently experiencing low level, although continuous, targeted bullying which gives me constant anxiety about work and makes me feel incompetent. Other members of staff have even commented upon it to me, but would be reluctant to speak up for fear of putting themselves in the line of fire. I've downloaded the ACAS leaflets about bullying and considered going to them, but I'm worried about actually proving it because they're clever enough to make it seem innocuous.

It's all very well accusing someone, but most likely the result would be a bit of noise and then the accuser losing his job unless there's cast iron evidence. I'd wager in most instances the bully is clever enough to make it a constant psychological battle rather than anything that could be demonstrated on paper.

Peter Hain said the "attack" on the Speaker was motivated by those "resisting his essential parliamentary reforms". Labour MP Barry Sheerman also defended Mr Bercow, saying he had been the "best reforming Speaker for 100 years", and it was only a "small group" of parliamentary officials "hated" his modernising efforts.

When you see the pomp and pageantry in Parliament it is easy to imagine that there is some resistance to change.

Frankly, they should move all the MPs and their staff to Middlesbrough and flog the Palace of Westminster to the Russians, Chinese, Qataris, Disney or whoever offers most.

Get rid of the arrogant moron. He has wee man syndrome, it stands to reason he's worse behind closed doors than he is in parliament.

If his put downs were consistent it would be fine, but he focuses on a random party that isn't Tory and picks on them for that session.

Anyone and everyone is getting accused of anything and everything.
Just another day in Westminster.

I know right. I'm expecting to be bagged, tagged and dragged away in the middle of the night by the 'hate police' because as teenagers we constantly harassed Win San, the local Chinese take-away, by phoning up and asking for things like Sum Yung Chick, Cream of Sum Yung Guy, Cho Kon It, Hu Flung Poo etc. etc.

Hopefully, means he'll get kicked out and we can finally vote for a major party again around here

Using ' Bercow ' in the OP 3 times has left me wondering if is relevent to me without a link.

Who is Bercow ?

I quite like him has a speaker, roundly disliked by pretty much everyone and the focus of numerous campaigns over the years to have him removed, suggests to me he's doing something right.

Whilst I agree that this should be investigated and treated as it would be in any other workplace, this is the least significant of the political wranglings going on at the moment in my opinion. I'm much more interested in the leverage being used by the Brexiteers in the Tory party, or the three line whip to vote against releasing the windrush evidence.

The more I see of this current generation of politics the more I feel we need some kind of drastic shake up.

His ex Private Secretary comes across as a a bit of a Mr. Humphrey from "Are you being Served" and doesn't seem to exude the robust demeanour of an ex military man. But by breaching a none disclosure payment acceptance he unfortunately joins the likes of American porn actresses and others similarly disposed to having their dignity bought, then coming back for another hand out and some brief notoriety.

Not that I am a fan of Bercow or his tawdry, legs akimbo wife, they are an embarrassment to the House and to this country.

Nooooooo What have the people of Middlesbrough done to deserve this... This in it own right is a worst kind of bullying.
