Is Bose stuff really THAT bad?

Having read the quote from the "sound engineer" I'd be even more against them !!...

So think of a USP, then feed the customer some techno babble to confuse/impress them so they feel stupid if they ask any question if they don't under stand it, and rig the sound to sound impressive in a 20 second demo.... Wrap it in "designer case" to gain female approval and pressure..... and over charge for it....

And this is the sort of honesty and integrity people want to buy from ???

Looked around the Bose shop in Freeport Braintree once... sales "expert" came over to tell me how good it was and try and get me to go into the "sound theatre" they had....
I said "no thanks, just looking, I have a good system" .........

"Oh what do you have sir" ....

"A Linn System" ..............

"Hmmm not heard of them" .............

"They are designed and made in Scotland....perhaps you should check them out"..................

Not sure if he was stupid or arrogant... or just both !!

Martin Audio is good....

...Prawn Cocktail flavour crisps are the work of the devil. The devil, I tell yer!! ;) :D

I once borrowed a pair of Bose active over ear noise cancelling headphones (an old model - the 9v battery had to sit in your pocket). I thought they sounded phenomenal, better than the seinhiesser 595s I have tried anyway.

I don't think there's much wrong with Bose products - many large companies over-promise and under-deliver - and a great many more sadly under-promise, over-deliver, and lose sight of the sales side of things and thus never get a chance at the 'big time'.

I don't like the stories of them suing magazines/sites which tried to do negative reviews, but there's 2 sides to every story.

You can get more bang for your buck in terms of build/sound quality with non-Bose kit for sure, but it depends what's important to you.

To me, the arguments over Bose seems quite similar to the arguments over Apple products.

With Apple, you have one group of people who can't understand why anyone would pay premium prices for Apple computers when they never include the fastest CPUs, the biggest hard drives, the highest resolution screens, etc. They point out that you can get a faster system for a much lower price.

The opposing argument is that Apple gear may not offer value-for-money in terms of the core spec, but it's worth paying for because the products are more than the sum of their parts in the sense of how they fit together, how they're aesthetically pleasing, how they fit seamlessly into your life, etc.

I don't think either of those arguments are necessarily 'wrong'. It just depends upon your priorities - whether you're after the best tech spec for the money, or whether you're willing to sacrifice some spec for that sense of style and simplicity and integration that you don't get with most non-Apple gear.

I think the same principles are largely true for Bose.

Bose are good for entry level audio, but they don't give great sound (lows mids and highs aren't great) as well as being hugely overpriced.

You could get an amp and bookshelfs for same price.

There isnt really much going for Bose, if you want a decent sized "dock" then there is Sonos Play:5, cheaper, same quality (if not better) and supports wireless.

I bought Bose speakers years ago expecting them to "integrate with my lifestyle".......all I asked of them was the ability to reproduce music......which they didn't.....and couldn't.
In fact they had quite the opposite effect, the sound quality was so shoddy and mediocre that they did anything but "integrate with my lifestyle",it was glaringly obvious that they were the weakest link,so they were promptly "de-integrated" and replaced with a pair of Kef's....PROPER SPEAKERS.
These days its quite laughable that their systems haven't really progressed in terms of sonic ability, yet so many people (who have probably heard nothing in the way of real Hi-Fi) still buy their latest "life enhancing, soul enlightening, home integrating acousti-crap" systems, that seem to be styled around a seventies clock radio with a cheapo CD player cobbled on.
BOSE see these people coming a mile away, and that's when what they really do best comes in to play...MARKETING.
FOOLS AND MONEY ARE EASILY PARTED!!

I think is is true to be honest. They are overpriced for sound quality, but they do have other benefits...

I listened to a set of Focal XS Book the other week. Sounded really good. Sure for £300 you could buy an amp and speakers that would out do it. But for a stylish set of 2.0 speakers I'm sold

So if you don't recommend Bose Companion 20s for a 2.0 desk setup without separate amp, what would you recommend?

Jumped in halfway through this but the Bose 20s have had consistently good reviews from quite a few places stating that they finally delivered on the 20s:

Don't let them misinform you. Bose is in no way like Apple.

Bose are overpriced for the quality you get and there are plenty of other better manufacturers

Yeah I was very impressed by the in-store demo... but the other voice in my head is fuelled by the likes of most people here!

If anybody can recommend you something for the same price on here that's better then I would go for it if you would be in a postion to trial or hear them.
Good luck.
