Is DRM really that bad?

As before, this five minute launch seems to be an issue for you only.

Not really:

Its ok now, but it slowed down to a grind earlier.

I've never had this issue with Steam.

Just because you've never had an issue, doesnt meant that no one else has or that only one person is having it. Its rather ignorant to assume so. Steam could have had some problems while you werent using it, so you wouldnt know if the problem had occurred.

I dont understand why they persist with DRM.

All DRM does is cause problems for legitimate paying customers as it's simply stripped out of any pirate release.

Thats not really true though:

Steam rips give false positives in some anti virus
GFWL rips can have missing functionality
Ubisoft Orbit games can have missing triggers so that you get stuck
Most multiplayer games cant be played online on official servers

It would be stupid not to include any DRM - games would still be pirated and be released a lot quicker with all aspects of the game available. At least at the moment DRM means that people will purchase a cracked game just to get the MP modes.

I do think the developers need to add value to their DRM schemes though - such as cloud saves and auto patching.

May i point out the date connected to that steam forum thread? Over 18 months ago. I can't see any threads on your google link either than are more recent than that, hell most are years ago.

Steam takes a good couple of minutes to login but starting up games can take anywhere from instant to extremely slow. Though i have always put both of these issues down this pc being slow and the internet being a ****ty 512kbps 3G wireless that is very temperamental sometimes. Either way, 5 minutes is overexaggerated or somethings up at your end more than likely.

Ubisoft's new DRM I found to be flawless on Splinter Cell & Prince Of Persia. Its very minimal perfectly syncs my cloud saves across everytime so I can play on my 2 PC's & it has the exact same saves always available. Game loading time is also very quick due to the lack of DRM I really like it & hope they release it on more games not less.

The only way I can see people not liking it is if they are pirates as this DRM is by far so easy to use & takes seconds to get going.

Looking to purchase settlers 7 and ive seen a lot of people having problems with the DRM. What are the Good points and bad points?

FWIW I have bought and had Settlers 7 installed for a while now and I have never had a problem with the DRM used. The game works fine and the updates and installed ok. As I have not trawled to find other peoples particular problems I'm not sure how typical my situation is.

All other forms of DRM at best inconvenience the customer (having to uninstall / revoke activations before you can install an OS for example, or beg the publisher for more activations via a premium rate phone line) or at worst deny access to your games at all.

I don't remember the details fully as it’s over 6 months when I last checked, but Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Athena involves premium rate number and/or having to send proof to Atari once 3 activations are used up.

No revoke ability, so unless Atari have de-activated the authorisation limit this year sometime, it's just an inconvenience that doesn't need to still be in place.

Yeah there are not too many PC gamers left who do not have always on internet connections nowadays are there

Of course, we forgot, all gamers have perfect 24 hour connections that never drop or resync, nor does anyone play games on laptops. :o

False positives, who cares if you know it's safe?
Missing functions? They usually have a work around.
Missing triggers? more work arounds.

Can't play online? True. There's always been a fix to this, online authentication linked to an account/key. Don't have one? Tough.
Don't need the rest of the pap DRM comes with.

I bought S7 last weekend for £13 (digital download) from a popular high street shop's download selection.

I was a bit worried about the DRM and the other issues that people go on about, but it runs perfectly for me, so dont be put off. I have even tried mp which worked without fault.

Hope that helps

Some DRM is good, like steamworks integration i don't mind as i use steam every day and i can always access my games.

The DRM i dislike is the one that stops you playing the game if you happen to get it early, this happened with me with GTA 4 and its happend with Dead Rising 2. Ive legitimately got the copy installed but because its not released i cant play it.

tell that to all the people who bought settlers 7 on release day and couldn't play it for weeks, coz ubi's servers couldn't handle the load and kept going down.

there servers are at least better now, and i've not had any problems with settlers 7 recently. But if ubi continue to have more problems with thier servers, it means we'll be locked out the game through no fault of our own.

id much prefer it to be on steam

theres not always work arounds.
and i've seen games that when cracked are buggy as hell.

just because most games can get cracked and pirated with DRM, doesn't mean its not working.

a lot of cracks require work arounds to get working properly. Althou some ppl dont mind this, others are put off by it and end up buying the game, so for those people, it does work.

it also prevents pirates from getting the game at the same time as paying customers (not always, but some games).
so at least its delaying the pirates, just not preventing it completly.

the way i see it, there are 3 types of games, those that will never buy games and always pirate, those that will never think about pirating a game, and always buy it when they want it, and those inbetween.

the DRM wont stop the first lot, but it can sway the people inbetween, which will increase sales

Because basing the statement 'everyone has perfect internet connections' on your own wired internet connection when your sat at home in/near a big city is clearly indicative of the entire world
