hi all

currentley have a 3200 a64 single core

been thinking of going dual core but i see post such as

grea if you do multi stuff and encoding

turn off single core to play game right

am i right in thinking that its a load of hassle and you have to keep switching from dual core to single core are there any problems with applications and so on

basically i use my comp for everything

encoding
playing dvds and music
games
streaming to my 360

but not all at once

No hassle at all.
Those who have problems probably haven't installed OS from fresh, or not installed CPU drivers.

prices have come down, might as well go for dual core now. Windows spreads the loads across both cores, so overall it will be more responsive for any heavish to really heavy tasks.

Just doing some divx encoding now, and my results have shocked me.

Amd x2 4200 @ 2.6 2gig of ram 1hr 40 mins
Intel 6300 @ 3.2 2 gig of ram 40 mins.

Thats the same movie and same sata drives.

And there's no need to switch cores off, I have no problems playing games etc.

looks fast with that intel

kids want me to build them a pc for xmas i have a sugo with a gigabyte mobo ,gig of ram 6800gs and amd 64 3200

im wondering if i can sneek an upgrade in there with out the wife knowing and putting my bits in kids comp with a new case lol

Good luck with the wife. I am planning the same "but it really needed an upgrade...notepad was opening so slow". We'll see if that one flies ! :p

I reckon it is a hassle or can be, I installed windows from scratch all the drivers, still cant play COD2 and lost coast crashes.

No hassle at all really. mine was a bit unstable when i swapped out my single core a64 for and X2. I just simply went to device manager, click "computer", then right click on "ACPI singleprocessor PC" and click upgrade driver. This changed to "ACPI multiprocessor PC" and a reboot made it work perfectly.

Took about half a minute in all.

I thought you said in your other thread that you fixed it by installing the Windows Hotfix?
Yeah so did I, worked perfectly the once after I installed the hotfix, came back to the game later, same problems.

I've heard that conroe don't need a hotfix or dual core optimiser but if you upgrade from a single core you may need to do the upgrade driver proceedure.
