hi guys

i have a creative x-fi extreme music, creative dont seem to be the first card recommened anymore but i thought they had exclusive eax.

Is eax dying in games, i think in bc2 war tapes is the top sound to choose, does this use eax?

thanks

asus xonar has eax emulation, and there is almost no difference between the two... I forget what it is called, but I think I read about it in a review of the Asus Xonar DX - try your google-foo.

No EAX isn't dead but it's a lot rarer than it used to be. It still pops up from time to time. DIRT2 used it for example. Developers are rightly moving to less proprietary audio APIs that give a more uniform experience across different vendor hardware though.

X-Fi cards still provide acceleration (perhaps improved quality too, I'm not sure) to EFX (EAX's more open replacement) in OpenAL and FMOD games.

Interestingly I note that MSI have started bundling 'Quantum Wave' soundcards with some of their motherboards. These are licenced by creative and support up to EAX 5 (yes 5). A number of other manufacturers also produce X-Fi cards under licence.

Additionally the Asus Xonar series supports up to EAX 5 by emulation.

Pretty much all gaming cards support EAX 2.

It is dying a death though. It's very rarely seen as an option in games anymore.

I reckon we will never see EAX 6...........
