Is eyefinity all it's cracked up to be, and which screens for it?

Quite a lot of people rave about eyefinity setups, but is it actually as good as everyone makes out? Or is it just really nice for racing type games, but how about FPS, strategy etc?

I currently have a 3 screen display (although not eyefinity, or eyefinity capable), it is comprised of a Samsung T260 (26" 1920*1200) as a centre, and a portrait orientated Viewsonic VX922 (19" 1024*1280) on either side.

I've been thinking of upgrading my monitors when I buy a new PC (within a few weeks, as I want to see how sandybridge does, then either getting that, or previous gen), and am considering getting 3x24" displays.

So, is eyefinity worth getting for FPS games, and strategy games, and if so, which monitors should I get for it? If not, any particular reason why?

If I do get new monitors, I wouldn't want to be spending more than about £180 each on them (couple possibly rise to about £200, but that really is the limit), and I will also require vesa mounts on them, as I will be mounting them on monitor arms.

So, I'll shut up now, and hopefully someone is kind enough to read my waffle and give me an opinion ;)

Havent used it, but Ive seen demos and it looks very good for fps, as you can see more of whats to the sides of you, I imagine if you played competitively you could start to clean up, lol

If you can you want to try n find monitors with thin bezels, as this can be distracting initially although once you get into game you dont notice, this is 2nd hand info BTW

Edit: Oh dont think it would help RTS too much tbh

I've used it, very nice for FPS, Driving and Flight Sim games. The main problem is the hardware required for decent FPS and eye candy and of course the bezel thickness. Even with the Bezel correction it is a pain. These days I simply use one large high resolution 30" monitor.

I have a dell p2310h. Really good monitor with the best warranty. I would recommend getting the slimmest one with slimmest bezels. Ibiught mine before there were any decent active dvi to dp adapters so i had to spend the extra for a dp monitor. Now ofcourse any monitor with dvi will do

I find them great for strategy games, as I can see the whole map. For FPS/third person shooter games, the wider view is a nice bonus. RPGs are good as well as I can see more.

As others have recommended, try get ones with a nice slim bezel. Also, perhaps find ones with a 16:10 ratio? I have 16:9 myself but I heard 16:10 gives a more immersive feel.

I'm seriously thinking of getting 3 screens for an eyefinity set-up. My main uses are racing sims with a racing seat (to get triple monitor mount). I mainly "race" and play iRacing, rFactor, F12010, Flight Sims (Rise of Flight & IL2) plus some FPS such aas BFBC2.

I am looking at 3x23" or 3x24" screens for this setup. I will be getting a Sandybridge system with either a single or possibly crossfired 6950/6970 unless I hear good things about the 6990 whilst I dither around.

Struggling a bit regarding the screens - they must have low input lag - my current NEC24GXM3 is great in through mode. I am open minded regarding panel type - I have enjoyed the NEC which is some sort of VA panel if I recall but not too laggy.

Even 3x22" screens may be enough real estate. I am open minded budget wise too - Prepared to pay from £150 to around £300 per monitor if it's justified. Tempted by the Benq 120hz monitor at the top end - seems to have reasonably low lag and the 120hz facility will be nice if / when framerates get to that level although some people seem to suggest it looks smoother at any point of 60 frames. That said not opposed to a cheaper set-up with thin bezels and good response.

Previously a Displayport was reuired on the monitor or an expensive active convertor I understand displayport to dvi are now a reasonable cost - only needed for one monitor anyway so that shouldn't limit the choices.

Any views, experiences or recommendations for suitable monitors ?

Cheers
