I'm just cautious that it might be missing things we take for granted today like 1920*1080, lots of control options. How does it play today (on a windows 7 pc?)

And is it a good game?

I just read Freespace 2 wiki and I assumed it sold well but according to the wiki it sold very few despite excellent reviews.

I put so many hours into this game. Epic battles, great story, mission editor could do whole campaigns. It's a masterpiece.

This and Tachyon: The Fringe, were what got me into PC gaming.

Great game, but I can remember the modding being very confusing and time consuming; maybe they've streamlined the process in the last couple of years?

I played the original and loved it then we moved and I lost the install media. Then about 3 years ago I bought it again on GOG and patched it up with the community mods.

It is a great game.

Got this in my GOG folder Freespace 2 (October 1, 1999)

comes in at 1.56GB

GOG selling it over £6.

Wonder why no game has come out to take up the mantle. Was an epic scripted story that had me playing it for months.

Fun times.

Indeed. My favourite game of all time, it is such a crying shame that no other space game has come to take the crown.

Freelancer was also another fantastic game. I think Elite 2: Frontier, Freespace 2, and Freelancer are my 3 favourite space sims.

why does no one ever mention starlancer in these threads? fantastic game, freelancer gave you freedom but starlancer had stacks of atmosphere which was far preferable to freelancer's cartoony vibe.

Was it on PC? I only had it on Dreamcast.
But yes, was a fantastic game. Even had a outcome that affected a later mission!

lost count how many time ive completed both game's.

the introduction to beam weapons in the second is amazing.

one of the best line uttered in a game

"pilots, meet the colossus, the largest space fairing warship ever created."

Frontier was king for me on the miggy.

And the first elite on the speccy was awesome but would just be a nostalgia trip now.

The new elite dangerous we all have been waiting for is just not cutting it for me at the moment.

Well I went out and bought it and... it is incredible!!

I got the whole Open FS2 pack and it looks, runs and more importantly feels incredible, can't believe I've been missing this all these years!!

For anyone for whom this isn't normally their thing, just go for it:)

Good work. One of the great things bout FS2 is the 'feel' as you say, the control system is really good because it is reasonably in-depth in terms of options yet it remains very intuitive so you rarely feel like you are battling with your interface like you do with some space sims.

It has a really strong storyline so make sure you play through the whole thing.
