hey guys,

ive been waiting so long for a 1440p IPS 144hz monitor, and now they are here im looking at getting one, so reason i ask if G-sync is worth £240 is because is because the ASUS MG279Q is 1440p IPS and 144hz, the other monitor is the Acer XB270HU, which again is 1440p IPS and 144hz but is £240 more expensive than the ASUS and all it has is G-sync.

here is my system specs

FX [email protected]
ASUS crosshair v formula z
corsair xms3 2x4gb 1600mhz
gigabyte GTX 970 G1

i know G-sync will be a benefit but for an extra £240 just to have that? im really not convinced its worth doing, any input would be appreciated.

thanks :)

having owned and used gsync i personally dont think with the current pricing its worth it unless you are in a scenario where your fps hovers a lot between the 40-60 area. This range is where gsync and variable refresh rate in general shine the most imho.

Save your money, a 2nd 970 won't do much @ 1440p 144hz. Honestly that Asus is an okay buy even if you can't use freesync or do much more than 60 fps simply because of its market positioning. Alternatively, you can always just keep it at 1080p too. Achieving >100fps in the newest games at 1440p is not really realistic short of getting Fury X CF/980 ti SLI. As for the Acer, that would be a very poor buy for you.

Whether its worth the extra dunno - I do like having it and grown a lot more attached to it lately but I could probably go back to 120Hz without gsync without too much issue.

Right now wouldn't trade my ROG Swift for anything other than maybe an IPS that had otherwise identical stats.

It's one of those your better trying to get sat infront of and trying it yourself before you justify the cost etc.

I paid more as the bonus of going back to 1440p is useful for day to day usage also.

i have a 24" 1080p 144hz TN panel next to me, i really want the 120/144hz back but the image quality of this IPS it just to good to turn down.

the most appealing thing is 144hz with IPS, everything else is just a bonus to me.
so you guys say the ASUS MG279Q is the monitor to go for for my needs?

GPU wise, add another 970 G1 or sell on and get a stronger card? (980 ti used off the MM)

thanks

If you're gonna get that Asus it would make more sense to get an AMD card to go with it. Yes, the 980ti is better than a Fury X atm but the difference isn't particularly significant nor is it gonna stay this way.

Once you go g-sync, you can't go back.

I notice the slightest tear immediately and my body convulses. It's like when you're falling asleep and you trip.

The acer is the only other 1440p 144hz ips out atm correct?

Dont want another AMD i like the geforce experence and nvidia control panel, i will keep my 970 as it is if it will run 1440p ok, its doing ok at 1600p atm

im leaning towards the MG279Q, i would like G-sync as i use nvidia GPU's but its a lot of cash for it...

i know the PG279Q is on its way out but its still an extra £170 just because it has G-sync

the B-grade monitor is tempting me lol

The problem with G-Sync is that it's proprietary, and that's good for no one. nVidia loves their proprietary technology, and it's very frustrating. It's also the reason why their proprietary things don't ever really take off, because people don't like being locked in to specific hardware to get features that they've paid for.

shall i go with the MG297Q then? as long as its 1440p IPS 144hz, thats what im looking for,

would adding another 970 G1 be a wise move?
