Is G-Sync worth that much more?

First up, I'm not trying to cause trouble.

I was having a rethink on my 970 SLI and 4k idea, and I ended up looking at the IPS 1440p Swift... For £750. Now, it looks amazing, but... The IPS 1440p Dominator is £300 cheaper. For that money I could buy an R9 390 as well and have money left over, not to mention a spare GTX 970 to replace the GTX 580 in my second PC.

Is the Swift worth the extra £300?

I would have said no 2-3 months ago but im starting to turn around on that. I still dont think g-sync is worth the premium if you can maintain a solid 60 fps or higher 100% of the time but this is where im starting to change my stance on g-sync cause my 980ti cannot maintain 60 fps or higher solid in some of the games i play at 2560x1080 let alone at 75hz and while my framedips are usually a good deal apart it does happen and i hate it to the very core of my being..

Sorry for being overly dramatic here but if you are sensitive to this sorta thing and perhaps a perfectionist this sorta thing will suck the joy out of your games to see the stutter and tearing even if its only for ½ a second.

Back when i tried g-sync myself i was testing mostly bf hardline and that game i could keep at 100+ fps which made g-sync feel like a waste of money but today playing gta 5 and specially games like witcher 3 i actually wish that i could afford a g-sync screen so those framedips to 50 wouldnt bother me.. Also the higher hz is always nice :)

Simple answer is yes. Gsync was and is a revelation for me (original swift). You usually pay £100 to £150 premium over what the particular monitor should cost without a gsync module but I think a bit of extra price gouging is going on too.

The brand new IPS swift is very expensive though!! You don't *have* to spend that much to experience gsync, but it's probably the best gaming monitor out there now.

OK I'm pretty sold on adaptive sync being the way forward, but I've reread my original post and realised I was completely unclear.

What I meant was, I could get the Asus MG279Q ROG Dominator (a Freesync panel) and an R9 390 to run it for less money than just the Asus PG279Q ROG Swift on its own.

I'm convinced (personally! Not trying to change anyone else's mind!) that G-Sync is technically better than Freesync due to the refresh rate doubling at low FPS, and the wider adaptive sync range (at least between the MG279Q and the PG279Q), but I've never seen either G-Sync or Freesync in use.

What I'm trying to get my head around is whether G-Sync is worth the price premium over Freesync.

Even assuming there was a major advantage to be had for a G-Synch monitor with a wider range of adaptive synch frequencies than one of the first gen. of Freesynch with a narrower range, it's mad if you're on a limited budget (95% of people).

In your case you could get 2x Fury Pros and a Freesynch monitor with identical panel for the same as a 980Ti and GSynch monitor. Guess which'll look better and be faster (not the NV solution)?

gsync is not worth the £150+ tag over 40-144hz freesync.

But since you have a 970 already, you don't really have much choice unless you don't mind selling it and getting a 390/second hand 290x.

If you don't want to go with AMD at all ever for whatever reason, you don't really have much choice anyway though.

Dont forget, you can get freesync and crossfire now as AMD officially support it. I am in the same boat, and Im thinking of either getting a fury x and a freeysnc 144hz or 980/(ti) and a gysnc 1440p which there is literally 1 price bracket, 600-1000!

I'm looking to upgrade the GTX 580 in my other PC anyway, so the GTX 970 could easily find a home in there.

I don't have a particular AMD/Nvidia bias. Up until the HD2900XT came out I'd had plenty of cards from both manufacturers, but Nvidia won that round with the 8800GTX. I went with the GTX 970 this time because I'd managed to convince myself the R9 290 would be a loud card.

I'm just having a hard time getting over the price difference between those two Asus monitors!

The noise of 3rd party 290's like the trix and msi GE aren't too bad tbh, especially if you undervolt it and the fan speed doesn't go above 50%

Yeah the price of gsync is rather frustrating, personally the thought of being locked down to one brand of GPU if you want to use the sync feature puts me of even more as I don't want to be tied to either GPU brand :(

Here's hoping that nvidia will offer support for "adaptive sync" if their pascal GPU's have the hardware to make use of it....
