Is generic memory holding me back?

Hi guys,

I've put together a secondary build with reasonably good bits and pieces; gigabyte p31 mobo, q6600 slacr, 450w corsair psu and at stock settings I'm 100% stable - 26hrs prime95 ;)

However, as soon as I overclock I get errors/bsod etc. Even with the slightest OC - 200MHz for example. I've tried lots of combinations in the bios and I can boot into windows but as soon I put the system under any sort of pressure, it falls over.

Since the q6600 is such a great chip I'm beginning to think that its my ram; 4gb of generic stuff out of an old lenovo machine :(

Any thoughts?

When you overclock the Q6600 are you dropping the divider for the RAM so it doesn't overclock?
Yup. Tried underclocking it with a 2.00 divider. Strangely, the e7500 I used to have on this board overclocked so easily - I literally just up the fsb and increased the voltage slightly, the rest of the boards settings remained default.

Could I just be the only person in the world that has a non-overclockerable q6600 :p

Ps. The chip was pulled out of an old acer unit; they couldn't have done anything to it during assembly could they?
