As I sit here nursing a pint of the old black stuff I was wondering, is it really good for you ?, you hear people saying that it's full of iron and antioxidents etc but is this really true ? and if so which is best, original or draught ?,

I've heard this aswell.

What I will say is that if i go out on lunch with some colleagues to the local pub and we have Guiness it always fills us up and we never need to buy any food!

It is possible to live entirely off Guinness without the need for anything else.

So long as you get a good price for it.

Myth.
Is Guinness fattening? How many calories does it contain?
Guinness is no more fattening or calorific than any other beer of similar alcoholic strength. The beer has no fat, however it does contain protein, sugar, carbohydrates and alcohol. The alcohol accounts for 65-75% of the calorific content irrespective of the beer in question. Per pint, Draught Guinness has 210 calories; as a reference, one pint of semi-skimmed milk has 260 calories and one pint of orange juice has 220 calories. Draught Guinness actually has fewer calories than most other premium beers and lagers.

Its actually probably the worst beer for you! It contains hundreds of toxic chemicals, including some cancer inducing ones iirc and the darker a beer is, the worse it is for you!

Sorry to break it to you, but it contains very little iron too!

EDIT: Dammit i remember reading ^^^ about the chemicals somewhere, but can't find anything about it on the net now!

Oh well... only drink it once in a while, a bit too heavy for me unfortunately, cant drink too much of it :(

Favourite pub lunch / dinner drink though, 2 pints of it goes down well enough with a nice dinner / steak / whatever :)

most alcoholic stuff is bad for you at some level...but we dont drink beer to be healthy do we

apparently darker beer is better for your heart than lagers though....

Yes, for a bet I went on a guiness diet, nothing but Guiness for 6 weeks.

Worked wonders. I lost 3 stone. Unfortunately, I also lost 3 weeks of my life, all my money and all my friends. :)

Don't try this at home. (Only if you live on your own). ;)

BS tbh. Toast contains cancer inducing chemicals, as does any BBQ food, amd coke. You still eat that stuff.

The darker the beer the more healthy it is in general, more vitamins, minerals, proteins, carbs and general goodness.

Its a poison, same as all other alcoholic drinks - and as such, any trace amounts of Iron are useless. (and you would need to drink about 15 pints a day to get your RDA from it) - There is nothing benificial about it. In fact, drinking a glass of water and eating an Apple would give you far more Vitamins and Minerals without the ethonal - but obviously, its not as much fun.

It is still recommended by a number of doctors, still advertised as being 'Good For You' etc - and what a load of rubbish that is. But the mere fact that you asked about it on an Internet forum, just proves that their age old marketing is still making people think ;)

My mum was known to have the odd pint when she was pregnant with me. Not done me any harm (I think). It could also be where I get my love of Guinness from :)

Of course it's good for you. After a few pints I always feel great and on top of the world. Can't beat the oul Guinno. My da used to put Guinness in my bottle once a week when I was a baby, as did most das from around here. Look at the size of me now. I'll tell ye, it works wonders that stuff.

Whoah there, thought small amounts of red wine were supposed to be good for your heart? Hardly a poison. Anyway with all the **** you breath in walking down the street, a bit of alcohol isn't going to do much harm.

Couldn't stand the stuff when I was younger, but now it's one of my favourite drinks. In a pub that doesn't do ales, I will always have a guinness rather than having some awful lager - heineken or whatever (they all taste like ****).
