Having an arguement here. Tried to dye my shirt to white with Harpic, and wondered why it never bleached to white. Asked OH, and was told that because Harpic isn't a bleach - just a toilet cleaner and disinfectant.

Asked two hags on MSN, and they both seemed surprised when I said it wasn't bleach. One said it says it's bleach on the TV advert, the other said to Google it. :D

Opinions below, please. :o:o

It is a bleach, but you wont bleach it white. White is a dyed colour. What you would get is the natural colour of the fabric.

I used some 30p odd cheap bleach, and it bleached the blue colour out of the shirt turning it white.

Of course hand dying the shirt made it look a complete mess, so am looking to bleach the colour out and machine dye the shirt instead. :)

Why don't you just buy a white shirt in future?
Because I want a light blue one, hence the machine dye.

Basically I somehow bleached the shirt white/cream. So tried to hand dye it bck to light blue, but made a hash of it. Hence the removal of the existing dye and machien dying instead. :o

Why don't you just buy a [insert colour] shirt in future?
If I bought a shirt for the same price as it the dye and bleach, it'd look a mess. It's a nice quality shirt I'm trying to revive, or I wouldn't normally bother.

bleach isn't good for anything. Even fabric.
I wouldn't want to "revive" a nice quality garment with it.

The only thing it's good for apart from de-germing bogs is for soaking kitchen cloths in to get rid of coffee/filth stains.

The bleach will make the quallity suck balls:(

It will dry the fibers out like it does to teenage girls hair!

To save starting a new thread, I recently died one of my white shirts pink. :(

What would be the best way of getting it white again? It's a linen shirt FWIW.

not true, white is not a dyed colour.

how white the fabric gets depends on a number of things - how strong and what type of bleach it is, what type of dye was originally used on the fabric (some are very bleach resistant) and what type of fabric it is (cotton would be best).
