I've come all the way back to looking at the benq EX3501R after missing out on the AW3418DW

It says hdr10.
Is this worth anything Or just marketing bs?

I've not owned a monitor with HDR. I know on my OLED TV that HDR movies look incredible as does sports broadcast in HDR. I did grab my PC downstairs over Xmas and BF5, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, MotoGP 2018 and Star Wars Battlefront all look amazing. Being OLED probably helped a lot with that as well. I will hopefully be upgrading my monitor this year and I will most likely be getting one with HDR

I would say so, big difference on my LED TV. Although personally I’m waiting for a decent 4K/HDR monitor that does 144Hz and a GFX card that can drive it.

HDR10 is a content format (the most widely used) and means nothing more really than that the screen can accept an HDR input signal. Whether or not the display can then output and show a picture that offers any kind of HDR benefits is entirely separate. That will depend on the screen technologies like whether it can support backlight local dimming (and to what extent), whether it has an increased peak brightness capability, whether it has a wide colour gamut, whether it supports a 10-bit colour depth.

this article will really be worth a read to understand what makes an HDR display

In my current setup im about a metre away from the screen which is wall mounted on an arm and can use without moving head.

Yeah I know for sure it would be good, but I'd have to make a few changes to my desk setup to make it work, and it's hard to justify when I have a decent 34" widescreen and the OLED downstairs for the front room.

I really just want something that is roughly my current monitor size but OLED instead of IPS, just gotta wait a while I guess.

Did you see that Alienware have made a 55" OLED monitor? C9 must be half the price, which definitely makes the C9 the better purchase, but interesting anyway. Model number is AW5520QF.

There is the 48" CX model due or shortly if that's any better.

Bloody hell that is expensive and only real advantage is the DP port. For that money you could get a 65" C9 and a top tier GPU

HDR10 on a non-OLED screen, I'm not too sure of.

Run of the mil HDR on a monitor is a joke. A pittance which looks rubbish and the SDR version is better and more accurate to what was meant to be represented. On edge-lit TVs, I also think its very redundant and prefer the SDR version most of the time.

High-end FALDs do HDR10 justice in bright scenes but I find they REALLY struggle in dark scenes to control the backlight to preserve deep blacks and bright specular highlight detail whilst not showing faults (banding, halo effect).

HDR10 on an OLED is worth it.

OK, so the hdr on the benq is just marketing

Shame oled tvs are too big for the desk.

Think I'll still get the benq anyway Its only 500.

The 1k monitors simply aren't good value.

Yes possibly could accommodate the slightly smaller screen, although I would hope my VESA mount would support such a screen so I can do away with the base.

No HDR10+ on the CX though, just standard HDR, should still be decent.

the VESA pattern on mine is 300x200mm had to buy a cheap adaptor plate for it to fit.

HDR on my old Samsung KS7000 and Newer Samsung QR70 and Xbox X or Playstation 4 Pro, I'd say a huge yes. On PC I would say no. Its Rubbish in Windows 10.

I was very tempted to get the LG 38WN95C when it comes out to replace my Acer Predator X34A. I really like the ultra wide format and the additional size plus extra 44hz was appealing but its only 450 nits. I might hold fire for the LG 48" OLED. The picture on my C9 blows my mind. I want to game on that screen.

Well when I switch it on in windows the colours look washed out. I'll mess around with it though.

Must not playing the right games then, because it's really not

Well I just enabled it and played Forza 4. And I have to say it was a jaw dropping experience. It looked incredible and the smoothness also using 120hz was awesome. I have to say I was grinning like a Cheshire cat. But Its not many PC games support HDR?
