Is it a bad idea to build a Sandy rig now

Am considering upgrading my H55 i3 to a 2500K or 2700K rig and with the 5% off at OcUK that makes the 2700K roughtly £250..
Would it be a bad idea to build now rather than wait for ivy and Z77?

i3 is currently overclocked at 4.2ghz with a 6950 but I am looking at having a go at building a cctv server for the house and it could be relegated to that..

I'd drop a use i5 or i7 in there and be done with it for a while tbh, as there is so little need for the absolute high end for everyday stuff. But that's me :)

If you are gonna use it as a gaming rig, no point in an i7, get an i5k, you will need either a p67 or z68 mobo though as h series doesn't support overclocking.

I was pondering the same thing, currently got a phenom 9950 but considering an upgrade to sandy, would people here recommend people like the op and myself wait?

Get a Gen3 motherboard and you are all set for an upgrade to Ivybridge / PCI-e 3.0

i5 is more expensive now than it was earlier in the year, but it is still pretty much one of the best chips for gaming right now, and will definitely last for a VERY long time before needing an upgrade to max out games.

I just bought an i5 setup with Gen3 now, but if you can afford to wait 4-6months then it might be better to hold off on the upgrade til then.

Wouldn't want to wait 6 months, was hoping ivy be released about April.
Was thinking of the UD4 as it has 16 phases for the cpu.

@Atom, are you wanting fully Gen3 (PCIe3.0 compatible on all its PCIe slots?)

If not than yeah, its a fab mobo plus its gigabyte. If you are, than look else ware, as gigabyte are not selling the gen 3 boards in the EU for some reason. Its a massive shame.

imo i would and did infact go for the sandybridge option today.

as for going with the Gen3 i can see no reason for buying tommorows tec today.

go with a z68 theres nouthing on a gen3 you wont get on a z68 that your gona be yousing

for a while and tbh when the new standerd comes round theres gona be better

motherboards your gona want anyway.

the thing with pc hardware if you look around you will see it doesent really devalue to

much.

so the sell on is probly gona be good anyways.

so i say go with the current consern witch is the z68 and save a few quid.

in this case it is probably worth getting a Gen3 MB at the moment, so you can run the new PCI-e 3.0 graphics cards when they come out without having to splash out on a new motherboard.

Only the first slot really as I am not into sli/crossfire.. With a bios update the UD4 can do pci3.0..

The 5% off is what is pushing me, that and I have read the price of motherboards will be rising due to copper prices.. I just don't want to blow £400 and in a few months feel as if I should have waited!!! Aaarrrggghhhhhhhh...
