Is it a NAS? Is it a HTPC?

Ive got to a point where ive got a fair amount of media stored on the hard disks in my gaming PC. Physical space is tight as it is because ive got a full custom loop so i cant really just keep adding disks. Also, when i move into my new place im going to be treating myself to a large smart TV which id like to stream my movies to.

SO... Ive decided to build another small machine to house all my media and stream it to my other devices. Realistically, its only going to serve files to the TV/gaming pc and my laptop. Im not sure if that means it going to fit into the HTPC bracket or NAS bracket? Im not so sure where the line is drawn between the two.

I have a Fractal Node 304, a corsair 500w psu and an old samsung evo 840 laying around that could be donated for this project. I plan to take the 6tb WD red from my gaming pc and add it to this as well. I need some help choosing suitable components to complete the machine though, as well as some guidance with regard to how best set it up. I know what RAID is, and what it does, but dont really know much about how to best configure it, or actually what level im best going for. For simple home use i was perhaps thinking of just getting another 6tb wd red and mirroring the data for now?

Any input would be great :)

Have you considered a HP Gen8 and Xpenology?
the gen8 is on cashback offer atm and can be had for around £110 after cashback

to be honest this whole area is new to me, so i cant say i know much about them. Would something like that be superior to a home built solution? or is it purely just cost factor?

Also, am i right in saying the difference between a NAS and HTPC is a NAS simply hands the file to the device to process, where as a HTPC does the processing, then passes the output to the TV? ..i think i probably knew that in some round about way, but it was silly oclock when i posted my initial thread lol. /endbrainfart

Dell T20 with Xeon processors are a bargain atm

I'm thinking of getting one to replace my HTPC downstairs (I have 2 N54Ls as servers but probably would have bought a T20 if it had been available at the time)

The T20s come with 4gb RAM, 1TB HDD, and a Xeon quad-core processor (Haswell) for about 220 after cashback

that to me is a bargain - in fact probably about same price the CPU is worth !
