Is it actually possible for me to overclock?

Hi,

I have a p4 2GHZ, three sticks of 768mb ddr ram, the motherboard is ABIT i845E

For some reason, in the bios, it defaults the cpu to 800 mhz, and when it does this, upon bootup, the message "CPU is unworkable or has been changed" Then I press F1 and it boots into windows normally. But CPU-z still shows 2ghz:confused:

In the bios when I change the speed to 2ghz (100 fsb) the message disappears. But any other speed, and CPU-Z still shows 2ghz. I've tried changing voltages and even custom fsb and a couple of times windows hasn't booted. The rest of the time it stays at 2ghz.

Does this mean I can't overclock? Is it my mobo that's holding me back?

THANKS!

Did a quick google on the error message displayed seems to be related to either your processor detection settings or else a problem with the cmos.

Clear the nvram and try again
Never owned a abit myself so maybe one of the other guys can throw a eye over it.

**edit**
what are your temps like when the system loads into the OS?
download realtemp.

My temps are 30'c in bios. But I don't think temps are the problem, because it won't overclock or underclock, no matter what I do.

It's quite possible that you can't.
The ABIT i845E is before my time, but cheaper motherboards just wont overclock. Components wont take it, bios doesn't offer it.

So I'll offer the generic solutions of new bios + clear cmos / replace with newer flashier components

Sorry man

I heard today, that it depends on your cpu

it could be 2.00ghz, in which case you can't overclock, or 2.00a ghz, in which case you can.
