For the sake of being "green", im getting into the habit of switching everything off at the wall socket. But i heard once that its better for the PS3 to be left on the red light standby?

just wondering what other people think about this

EDIT: BTW, i never switch the PS3 off at the back switch directly, i always hold the PS button on the controller, let it power down, go to the red light, then i switch it off completely

Can't imagine how it could be bad for it. Apart from when in use ours is always turned off at the socket. It only uses 2-3W on standby btw, versus 135-145W when playing a game.

I used to switch my PS2 off using the switch at the back all the time, infact it wasn't till about a year ago that i realized you could hold the power button to put it in standby, i just assumed it was poor design on Sonys part. I thought it had broken recently but i was wrong, it still works, launch console that as i'm sure you can guess from the above statement hasn't been treated too well.

I'm sure it won't hurt the PS3.

Not sure how that'd be bad for it. If it does break you can just use the warranty ;). Sony are good at returns.

Turning off any elelctical device fully is technically bad for it due to voltage surges when you turn it back on and increasing cyclic thermal stresses.

Tbh though it makes very little difference and will reduce the lifetime of the product very slightly versus the electricity saved by swithing things off.
