Nice idea, but I wouldn't waste money on Caviar Blacks for backup! Greens or Blues at close to half the price.
 
Yeah, WD Reds or Seagate NAS is a must.
I have my hands on a single board computer, Going to look it's potential for a NAS, stick a RAID controller on it.
If I'm lucky it'll be up to the job :)
