Is there bugger all temporary jobs going?

I've handed CV's into shops and don't hear anything back, I'm looking on the internet, most of the big players have no vacancies. I'm looking for some sort of summer job in the summer holidays to earn some bread but cannot find much, everything seems to be permanent.

I have very limited experience and have not really had a proper job, but have done voluntary stuff and can't see how this would hinder me when trying to get some simple job in a shop, looking at some of the people that work in them I think why on earth am I not getting a job :(

Shops rarely hire summer temps, the demand is generally over the Christmas period. Stop asking for temporary work, say you want a permanent position, then leave after the summer.

I've been sort of looking for something similar, but only month work. Problem is the agencies don't want my CV and there's ****** all other temporary jobs...

Problem you have is that even christmas temp jobs are normally longer than what you will want to be doing. That's not much time at all. :(

If you've got that mentality why bother?

Might as well join the army now!

What is wrong with that mentality?

Would you rather I go on the dole spending your tax money whilst trying to find a job? Or join the army?

I'd hope I'd get a job after going to uni..

Either way join the OTC or UAS when you're at uni. Supposed to be great fun (not to mention you get paid for it) and it will give you some experience on what being in the Army/Air force is like.:)

Have you tried any of the temp agencies? The jobs on offer probably won't be much fun but it seems tailor-made for what you want, you'll probably have to do a few simple tests but once done they'll offer you jobs that match with your skills (in theory at least).

They can be hit and miss. If it's anything like the ones in my town they won't even take your CV if you don't have any office experience... Not sure if that's common or not though.

I've never had any problems getting employment with temp agencies but I had done office work beforehand anyway - obviously there are some that are less than useful as you've found unfortunately. However it doesn't seem like it could hurt to try it, if there aren't jobs to be found otherwise then you're no worse off by having sent in a CV to them or even better go visit them in person and offer to do the tests there and then if it's an option.

Yep definately try, just saying sometimes it's not posible to join the agencies. Personally I went to each of the agencies and they point blank refused to take my CV even though I have a reasonable amount of employment (from part time before uni to internships) because I had no office knowledge. This was with Reed and a couple of the other big ones.

Never state you want to work temp work, will be impossible to find a job, say you are a perm worker.

Employer

Jark Recruitment

But I have no office experience as such, obviously I've probably learnt office stuff at college, and I have done some "helpdesk" work experience, but don't quite know if this would be acceptable, I was thinking of emailing the employer and ask, but I don't quite know how employers react to questions? My impression is that if I asked anything they would write me off instantly, or possible not even answer the email.

Awesome hours too, Mon-Wed would be brilliant for me.

I see some jobs and am reluctant to try apply, I have no idea what they do, even if it says training will be given, I'd scared of maybe ending up like a total numpty, I just feel I'll get stuff wrong all the time, I don't have the best confidence.

We (Homebase) used too, due to budget cuts we don't anymore, that said due to a fair amount of staff being students or the like, every year jobs come up around this time as people go off to uni or whatever they are doing, I've been there for nearly 3 years and seen a fair turnover.
